Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley DeDear.
Ashley, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
While living in Los Angeles in 2010, I earned my certification as an Airbrush Artist with Spray Tan LA. I knew I had to take this healthy way of getting your glow on back home and I did in October 2011. Educating others on the benefits of airbrush spray tans became 2nd nature. It is very important to me to encourage others to avoid tanning beds and from getting too much sun. Skin Cancer runs in my immediate family and I have witnessed a great deal of skin damage over the years as an artist.
Over the years in Houston, I built a clientele base of family, friends and referrals while working a full-time job. More and more people were spray tanning as time went by and it became more known in Houston. I would travel to clients’ homes or they would come to my house and be sprayed in a mobile pop up tent.
In 2015, I knew this was the time to step up to the plate and open my very own custom spray tan spa. Spray tans were becoming more common and mobile business were popping up all over. I decided to get a place off Beltway 8 and 290 in the heart of Jersey Village knowing it would be a great location for my current clients and to grow. After 3 long months of construction with my father, sisters and close friends, Texas Spray Tan, Spa & Boutique opened its doors in December of 2015.
Has it been a smooth road?
There were issues with construction delays & certain permitting guidelines that all tied into financial needs. I was unemployed at the time which made things tough and didn’t give me the opportunity to market in ways that would have helped jump start my business. Running my own business has caused me to miss many nights of sleep along with missing out on events with family & friends. I devote all of my time and energy to Texas Spray Tan and will do what it takes to succeed. Wearing all the hats had to be done during my first year, it has been very stressful but extremely rewarding at the same time. I am learning that I will continuously hit bumps on this journey of mine.
