Meet Ashley Grubbs and Julie McCoy of Mind Your Mess

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Grubbs and Julie McCoy.

Ashley and Julie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I (Ashley) started Mind Your Mess in 2016 because I wanted to share my passion of organizing with the world. I was working a corporate job, which I actually kind of enjoyed, but I knew it was not what I was meant to be doing. In 2017, I met Julie through a worldwide group of organizers and in 2018, we merged our businesses to become one. Before deciding to merge, I worked several large projects with her and got to know her work ethic and lifestyle fairly well. We have the same core values and share the passion of organizing so merging together was the best decision I’ve ever made for Mind Your Mess!

I (Julie) would have to say my journey to organizing started as a child. I would go over to friends’ houses and clean their rooms before playing — parents loved me. Only years later did I realize that I could harness this passion as a career until adulthood. I was working in a corporate job with awesome people, but I wanted something more. Eventually, my desperation to do something new led me to the soul-searching question: “What could I do at any point in the day and be happy about it?” My answer, of course, was, “Organize something!” This was a skill I’d been developing *my entire life*, so I excitedly began researching the reality of professional organizers. Not long after, I started my own business, and eventually, I met Ashley. Organizing is my dream job. Working with her is my dream job. Her strengths complement my weaknesses so well, and vice versa. Growing a business can be really daunting; I’m incredibly grateful to get to share the challenge with Ashley.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We have been blessed with a solid support team and the most amazing clients this past year. Every road has bumps in it, though. To say otherwise would be unrealistic. One of the bumps we’ve been working to smooth is the hurdle of spreading the word about Mind Your Mess — and professional organizers, in general. (A lot of people still have no idea what professional organizers do…or that they even exist!). Thankfully, our clients readily refer us and often volunteer to be a recommendation source. This has been a great help! But we’re always searching for new ways to grow our business. Trying to decide the best avenues for that has definitely been a challenge. Thankfully, we enjoy a good challenge and look at it as an ongoing learning experience!

Please tell us about Mind Your Mess.
Mind Your Mess is a professional home organizing business. We use organization to empower people and reduce their stress by helping them create clutter-controlling systems and maintain functionality in their home. Our all-inclusive packages allow clients to experience immediate relief from the overwhelm that disorder and clutter bring. Our clients don’t have to worry about taking items to donation/consignment, navigating The Container Store, buying the wrong size basket or bin, returning said item, taking items to shredding, and more.

Life happens, and messes are a part of life. People are always apologizing for the disorder in their homes, but we are 100% judgment-free. Organizing is an incredible tool that we are honored to use and teach.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Ashley: Visiting my dad in Bend, Oregon when he had a farm. And also jumping on my trampoline.

Julie: Playing in the woods. I grew up just north of Houston and would spend so much time exploring climbing trees, and building forts in our neighborhood “forest.” Those memories transport me to simpler days.
