Meet Bethany Webster

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bethany Webster.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I have loved creating since before I can remember. As a kid I would make art projects out of whatever materials I could find. My parents both travelled a lot when they were younger and I think seeing their photos sparked a passion for both travel and photography in me. I signed up for a photojournalism class in high school and started taking pictures with my dad’s old Pentax K1000, I loved learning how to roll and develop film and print pictures in the dark room. After college I travelled quite a bit during which time I met my husband while working in Vail, Colorado. I continued to take pictures everywhere I went but it wasn’t until I had my girls that I considered pursuing photography as a business. Friends and family had asked me to take pictures for them occasionally and when they were happy with the outcome I realized that maybe I could do this professionally. I upgraded my equipment and taught myself to use some editing software and then very nervously put myself out there. I’m so glad that I did because it has provided me a way to create while being able to be home with my three girls. The people I have met on this journey so far have been the most kind and lovely people, and I’m so thankful that we have crossed paths.

Please tell us about your art.
My hope is that my photographs tell true stories and catch real moments. My favorite photos are the unscripted and unposed ones. As a mom myself I know how quickly life changes and kids grow up, and photos are the best way to stop time and keep those brief but significant memories forever. I love to take photos of individuals and families, especially when I get to see them grow over time. When I get to take maternity, birth and newborn photos for a family I feel like I have been part of such a sacred transition and it is an honor to be invited along.

We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
There are so many opportunities to connect with other artists these days through social media and online groups. Attending workshops or initiating a meet up with similar artists is a great way to form bonds and support each other. I recently traded services with another photographer; I made a new friend and we each got some great professional shots–I love that I can now highly recommend her to others based on my own positive experience.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
My social media accounts will always feature my newest and favorite shots from recent sessions. Galleries and details about the sessions I offer can be found on my website bethanywebsterphotography.com.
