Meet Betsy Medina

Today we’d like to introduce you to Betsy Medina.

Betsy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Ever since I was a little girl I always was so fascinated with performing arts, when I was eight years of age I started singing at our local church, I was also part of the dance team for the church where choreographed dances with a banners or a tambourine. We would perform for big events when they would make big church campaigns, I also participated a lot by performing during the Kids Church which was held maybe once a month: here and there they’d also have me sing during offering time.

I have this memory about being in a church competition for child singers, and I competed against several kids, and I ended up winning this contest, the winner of the contest would get to come on a Christian radio channel which was very popular at the time. Imagine that, it was a dream come true for someone at that age (I was maybe ten years old). A little girl with big dreams. Once I was in middle school I strayed from singing and then found myself intrigued with the art of dance, I took dance classes throughout all middle school, and we performed during winter shows, talent shows, etc.

Anything that had to do with performing, I did it, I always favored Hip Hop, and once I entered High School I continued in that same journey, connecting myself with people outside of school by joining a dance crew at the time named “Eternal Effect,” we performed at events like Quinceaneras for example, I was so in love with dancing that I wanted to pursue a Background Dancer Career. I would attend dance auditions all the time. A couple of years later I found myself interested in what it would be like to be an actress, or to even try it, where do I start?

So I started searching on the web, felt like a very impossible task as there is so much fraud, and scam when It comes to that, you feel like it’s something that may be reached if you have inside connections or if you know someone. One day I met a man named Walter and he was the one who introduced me to the acting world, gave me the opportunity to try doing an infomercial for his channel, it was something so different from dancing and singing, but I loved it, the challenge it came with it and then I decided to start taking acting classes to see if they could teach me and if they could guide me.

It very much did, now I’ve done several background talent works, have been cast as the lead for short films, costarred for other short films, and guest starred in a feature film that was recently screened at City Centre Studio Movie Grill named “Family after All.”

I’ve also been a Featured Actor in the now airing “The Purge Tv Series” on USA Network, and I appear in Episodes 6-7. It’s been a long road; it’s been hard, I’ve cried and found myself at times almost giving up but am glad I have not.

All I can really say to anyone who is wanting to follow their dreams is DO SO, but be very patient and trust yourself and find a way to motivate yourself because NO ONE else is going to do it for you. Like Cardi B says, the love will be so fake, but the hate will be so real. I feel that completely!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all. My main struggle has been, I would say, is seeing lots of castings but not many with the LATINO ethnicity being needed for a certain role. Or having the time to make auditions, callbacks, and shoot dates needed. You may have the availability for one, but not the other and you really need to be flexible.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
What sets me apart from others is my determination to succeed in this industry.

Everyone can say they want it and are doing everything and anything, or that they are also determined. But actions speak a lot louder than words.

And to me, that’s what I’ve seen a lot of, more words than action. Anybody can want. But they aren’t showing anything for it. And their priorities are so separate from mine.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My childhood pretty much consists of a lot of church attendance lol. I’m not going to lie at that age I actually loved it, I loved singing and knowing that I was the center of attention.
