Today we’d like to introduce you to Allison Bond.
Allison, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
More than a decade ago, I found myself with MRI results showing a labral tear in my left hip with an underlying condition of osteoarthritis. I was only 33 at the time and didn’t want surgery on my hip. And what’s more, is that I missed my yoga practice because it was the way I got to connect to my true self after I had been asked by two yoga studios not to return because of my hip condition.
I had a part-time practice. I’m one of those people who came to yoga because I was invited by a friend to yoga and brunch and I was so excited about this quiche, so I went to both and was immediately hooked on yoga.
The impact my MRI results had on me led me to a breakthrough for me. Those results brought me to a place where I would start my lifelong study of the biomechanics and energies of yoga and spirituality. I was in pain, and I knew I didn’t want surgery and did what it took to get out of it. Once I realized that for myself, I began to share it with others. And this led me to my career.
Four months into a new home practice designed for my hip injury, I began to notice that I didn’t have pain anymore. Gone. I was standing, walking and sitting differently. I was practicing differently. I was beginning to truly understand my body. As a result, I began to get calls from people wanting the same thing, to relieve their hip pain, knee pain, shoulder pain. And they were willing to do the work with me and at home and having amazing results.
I’ve had a number of injuries since the hip injury, including a torn biceps tendon and other shoulder pain, my scoliosis which I’ve had since I was 12, a displaced vertebra in the neck and a few other minor ones. I had the opportunity to put myself back together, and I got to learn from all of that. I turned my aches and pains into an opportunity, and I’m running with it!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I worked for 14 years in the legal field, but my heart was in yoga. My commitment to growth and contribution is bigger than feeling comfortable. It has taken courage and grit, and my contribution to others makes it worth it.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Bond Method story. Tell us more about the business.
My specialty is yoga for injuries. I am known for my understanding and facility with anatomy and biomechanics. It comes naturally to me, and I can guide people to using yoga to remedy their aches and pains. I use unique cueing in hatha yoga to help correct the body’s misalignments, and each person’s body is different, so it’s very personalized, especially in my private lessons.
In addition to private lessons also offer workshops, The Hip Clinic, and The Shoulder Clinic, which help people understand the methods and movements for true freedom in the body. I teach a public class at Heights School of Yoga on Thursdays at 6:30 and I just lead a very fun and successful community yoga retreat with some other very talented women who are also experts in Vedic astrology and nutrition.
I developed an online program for active people who have hip injuries, and I will soon release my 21-day program for people who are inactive or need a gentler program to alleviate their hip pain. I am so excited to be in the process of bringing this to the world.
I am partnering with Varina Rush who created a business called Amazing Bond that brings mindfulness, meditative art and yoga to seniors with Alzheimer’s and dementia. Side by side, Amazing Bond brings yoga and mindfulness to caregivers for seniors, providing them a respite where they can have fun, relax and have peace of mind.
I’m really happy to bring something that is so needed for a community, and that touches so many.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck or coincidences. I believe that everyone has a path and the power of choice. I made some good decisions and some decisions that gave me lessons I needed for what was next on the path.
