Meet Brandon Nguyen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Nguyen.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve only become a stylist recently but I’ve always been into clothes from a young age. I would always go with my family to thrift stores. We were poor and couldn’t afford nice clothes. For me, it was like a treasure hunt. I wanted to find stuff that makes people ask where I got it from and I would say, “Oh, just the thrift.” I’ve been thrifting since I was around 12. And then that evolved into getting clothes where I can. Hand me downs, garage sales, flea markets, all that. Dressing myself up with whatever I could find.

Eventually, people started to notice me. I would get complimented a lot. They told me I was special. It made me really happy. A lot of my friends are artists. I think they saw the potential in me and started asking about my wardrobe. It started off with me lending a coat to my friend Daisha for a photoshoot. All I really did was just let her use my coat and she credited me as a stylist. After that I got asked by my friend Trent to style a shoot completely. Head to toe. I was nervous but I just went along. Using what I’ve amassed in my clothes hoarding, we did it. My first shoot I styled completely. Trent sent the photos to media outlets and it got featured in a magazine. My first ever styling in a magazine. Insane to me. And I think that’s what brought me to where I’m at now.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I wouldn’t say it’s been smooth but it’s definitely not rough. When I feel inspired, everything just falls into place and it feels great, but when I’m not, it’s like the opposite. I think this is normal for most artists so it’s not as big of a deal. However, the uneasiness of creating is still there. Seeing how people feel about my work and not knowing if they enjoy or not gives me anxiety. I pull through and try my best either way.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in styling for photoshoots and film. I also help with creative directing shoots as well. I’m most proud of my styling being featured in Ellement magazine. What sets me apart from others is that lean towards more alternative looks and I add little details to make a bigger picture.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Making art, being with friends, and being in a good environment makes me happy. Making art is a form of expression and I think that everybody wants to express themselves however they can. My friends put me a good environment where I am able to create.
