Thanks for sharing your story with us Brenda. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I come from a family of hairdressers and barbers, I have always been around it and it’s something I’ve always been interested in. When I was the little girl, I would practice on my family or whoever took the chance on me, there’s was no youtube or social media so it was a little harder to learn. The beauty industry is one of the fastest-growing industries and it’s always evolving. Men’s grooming is at an all-time high. My first job was 12 years ago at Supercuts, I learned a lot the time I was there. I eventually moved to work in the galleria area and focused on building my own clientele at a barbershop. It took a lot of hard work and consistency. I’ve always felt that being a woman in a male-dominated industry has made it much harder to prove myself but I also never back down. Owning my own business was always something I’ve strived for, this was a huge step for me in my career and I love everything about it! I’m so grateful for all of my loyal clients that have followed me throughout my journey and hopefully continue to do so.
Has it been a smooth road?
The main struggle in our industry is building and keeping a consistent client base. After I had my daughter I had to start over, most men don’t wait as long as women to get haircuts so I eventually lost all of my clientele during my maternity leave. I took this as a chance for a fresh start to build a new clientele in a more diverse area. Also, there is so much competition. We constantly have to evolve and offer something that sets us apart from each other.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Royal Studio Barber story. Tell us more about the business.
I specialize in men’s grooming. My services range from haircuts, shaves, beard maintenance to facials and chemical services for men. I want my clients to feel comfortable in my chair, that’s my top priority. Hot towels, good music and maybe a beer will turn their whole day around and have them feeling like a million bucks. A private suite definitely helps me give them undivided attention, they love that they can completely relax as soon as they walk in.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I definitely see our industry growing, there is always something new and exciting to look forward to. I love all the new trends and challenges we bump in to, that keeps us on our toes.
