Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Pikkula.
Brian, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
About 6 years ago I was in a job that I was unhappy with. On vacation on summer, I conducted a quick cost analysis and realized that an oral cancer screening device could be made better quality while being sold for less than the competition.
I called my now partner and co-founder, Robert Whitman if he could take a couple of prototypes to some dental offices for feedback. A little over 4 years ago, we were using my spare bedroom as an office/assembly location and now after a couple of product launches later, we have several dozen employees in a 19,000 sq ft facility.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The biggest struggle was not the sales aspect, which I assumed it would be when we started out. It was the difficulty in managing a sizable team after the two or so years of just my partner and me.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Forward Science – what should we know?
Our company, Forward Science, specializes in oral oncology. From early detection to diagnostics to products that help a patient when going through cancer therapy. I think our customer service sets us apart from the competition.
I am most proud that our products make a difference in people’s lives: from helping a clinician find oral cancer at an early stage and improving the prognosis to allowing a patient undergoing chemotherapy to be able to eat when otherwise without our products they would be on a liquid diet.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My wife, Amanda, was probably the biggest help and cheerleader. She had confidence in me while working a day job and also getting the company off the ground in my spare time. When building the company, there were many long hours at the office and frequent travel, she took on extra responsibilities at home allowing me to chase my dream.
