Today we’d like to introduce you to Bridgett Johnson, Philisia Washington.
Bridgett, Philisia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Our story is that of sheer coincidence and fate wrapped into one. In 2011 we were introduced to one another by a mutual associate. We realized quickly that we shared similar beauty interest and business goals. Our passion for hair was also partnered with the love of business. We began to collaborate on business ideas/brand creation, and the rest is history. We have been inseparable ever since. Below details how we individually started along the beauty path.
“Philisia..sweep up around my chair, so I can get ready for my next client.” These were the directions my grandmother gave as I sat around in her beauty salon Hair Exterior on Liberty Rd in Houston. I would love to spend my summers with her in the salon so I could admire the fabulous hairstyles that were being created. Let’s not forget about all of the adult conversations being discussed. My grandmother’s salon was the place to be. Watching how my grandmother exhibited such talent with her styling, top-notch customer service, and strong business acumen, I knew I wanted to be like her. I started braiding hair in middle school and installing weaves in high school. I went on to complete my bachelor’s degree from Lamar University. I performed hair weaving in college to help earn extra money, and I have been doing it ever since. I have always had a niche for all things beauty, and growing up. I prided myself on helping make my friends feel and look their best.
Bridgett Bumper Curls is the name I was often referred to as. My high school friends and I would always try to replicate the latest hairstyles on each other for fun. From the “dookie braids” of the ’90s (now referred to as box braids) to the spritz curls stacks, we would try them out. For fun, I would spend hours in the local beauty supply stores reading product labels to learn about the ingredient compositions. I always knew I would end up the beauty industry; however, I went on the complete by bachelor’s degree in business administration and an MBA with a management concentration. My mother worked as a maid all her life and did not want me to be fully dependent on working with my hands. She encouraged me to pursue my degree and advised that the beauty industry would always be there. Little did I know I would be the co-founder and CEO of an amazing beauty brand.
As we grow along this journey together, we are determined to leave a legacy with our brand that is lasting and pays homage to the inspirations that shaped us into who we are. Business Besties and GOAL Friends are what we are for life.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Smooth with a few speed bumps would be the best description. When building a brand, there is so much to learn, and often times, small businesses entrust others to assist in their vision building. Knowing what appropriate questions to ask to vet the contractors proved to be the biggest struggle for our brand. We have chosen to brand those struggles as growing pains. We often times share these lessons with business owners that are just starting out.
