Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittney Johnson.
Brittney, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
For as long as I can remember I’ve always been obsessed with pretty details and making everything look perfect. The process of planning an event gives me excitement like no other, so much that I was crowned the go-to girl for planning anything you can pretty much think of, amongst my family, friends, and colleagues. Two years ago I brought up the idea of turning my hobby into a business to a few friends who at the time were either pregnant or knew someone who was pregnant. My first two events were actually baby showers. I had no inventory, no business name, but I had a dream and also knew I had to start somewhere, so to the store I went. After sharing the events on my social media within a few weeks, I started receiving inquiries on how to they could get me to set up their event. I was born and raised in Baytown Texas and my hometown has supported me tremendously. There is absolutely nothing more rewarding as seeing something come to life that you have worked on day and night nonstop. Literally, something that started out as an idea then years later it turns out to be more than you ever imagined at the beginning.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No way! I don’t think building your own business from the ground up is ever a smooth road especially in my situation because I currently work full time, I have had so many setbacks during my journey I’ve lost count. Becoming a business owner has taught me patience, resilience, and gratitude. I started out being a self-taught planner and immediately dove right in and figured it out until I could afford to pay for classes.
My current struggle- This industry like most creative industries, can create high- highs and very low- lows. I’ve learned to you just buckle up and hang out. I get a rush when my clients tell me they loved everything about their event or when I get lots of positive feedback from their family and friends. But if I don’t hear anything after I’ve completed my job, my brain automatically resorts to the absolute worst-case scenario and the negative self-talk begins. I go through a list of things I could have done better for next time. And the next thing you know, I get a text saying they loved everything about it and then BOOM I can finally relax. One of the biggest challenges I had to overcome was self-doubt.
