Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittni Sparks.
So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved being around children and teaching others. Growing up, we moved around a lot, mostly between Houston and Lousiana. Every area I remember living in wasn’t the poorest, but it wasn’t the richest, but the teachers could not have been of better quality. Quite a few of my family members were all educators, my mom studied education and my grandmother was the best educator imaginable, serving for over 42 years. They all had a tender spirit about them, loving, genuine and they actually CARED. That touched me at a young age and I knew I wanted to be able to fulfill those expectations of others like they did for me. I’ve served in the education field for about six years now in many capacities. I was not always happy, however, and work began to drain me. I would always work at home and in my neighborhood, providing resume assistance, college application assistance, and pointing family and friends in the right direction to appropriate resources when they needed it.
In 2016, my life changed forever when I became a new mommy to an amazing little girl. 2016 was also stressful because I wasn’t happy at work, I started graduate school, and it seemed like the weight of the world rested solely on my shoulders. I knew something had to change so that I could be the best mother to my princess. I took a break one weekend, recharged, gathered all of my notebooks and tablets and ideas, and Sparks Consulting was created. So many students and families lack the essential tools that are needed to succeed. Either they do not have the time, money, knowledge or resources and become frustrated, or they just give up. That is extremely disheartening because THERE IS SO MUCH assistance out there. My goal is to guide others down a path to success. Whether they need help becoming more organized in their daily lives, or if they need an extra boost of confidence with starting college or a career, I want them to think of Sparks Consulting as their expert.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has certainly not been easy. I have dry spells (often, lol), and that in itself can be discouraging. There’s also quite a bit of competition out there, but I use all of that as my driving force to keep pushing. My support system is unmatched, and I have faith in myself and my work which keeps me going daily. My daughter is my biggest motivation. Everything I do and all that I work for is her, present and future, always.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
Sparks Consulting offers so much. Anytime I’m asked “well, what do you do?”, I have to take a breath and stick to the script, lol. I specialize in individual career readiness (resume building, adaptability and communication skills). In addition, I assist groups/companies/schools with organization and community outreach. Lastly, I advise students and their families with college preparation and navigating through the process.
I’m most known for being “great with my words”. My family, friends, and colleagues always come to me when they need a letter of some sort, an email proofread, or even a text, lol. It’s my gift. I love speaking and interacting with people, helping them reach their highest potential, and just sharing my experience and expertise. What sets me apart is my innate capacity for organization and my down to earth personality. I’ve been at the very bottom, and I am still climbing the ladder to the top. I have a story just like the next person, which doesn’t make me better or worse, it makes me just as human as the next.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was (and still am), such a brat, lol! I wasn’t the friendliest but I talked a lot which made people want to be around me regardless of the topic. I liked that attention and it carried over to adulthood. I’m like an ambivert, I like being social, but not for too long – and my alone time is necessary for my peace. I’m pretty straight forward, nurturing, supportive, honest and a team player.
I love MUSIC. I’m a self-proclaimed New Edition number one fan, and I just love everything from the 90’s music-wise. I enjoy traveling with my baby girl, family time, traveling, and everything about my New Orleans Saints! I’m pretty laid back for a 32-year-old woman. Staying home and reading or watching a favorite series is my idea of fun.
