Today we’d like to introduce you to Martez Hurt.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Martez. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My journey started in Washington, DC. I was born and raised in the inner-city projects of Washington, DC. Going thru different problems and facing adversity at a young age made me eager to want more for myself.
There were only two ways to make it out of my city at the time. It was either get a job straight after high school and work or go to college.
I choose to go to college. I applied to so many schools across the United States. I got accepted to 30 colleges and received a scholarship from Bill Gates to fund my schooling. It was such a blessing to accomplish this funding because I was still in poverty at the time.
Out of all of the colleges I was accepted to, I chose to go to Florida A&M University. When I landed in Florida things soon changed for me. It’s like I was living in paradise because things became so different for me and I started to view the world different.
It’s like I went straight from poverty to the suburbs in a Matter of time. I was in college, I was partying, I was having a blast. Especially since I was living off of a $141,000 scholarship and everything was funded.
After all of the partying and the fun. Then came the business side of things. I had blew all of my money having a good time and living the “college life”. I went broke and had to come up with a game plan. I didn’t wanna work for no one and I didn’t want to be on nobody else’s schedule so I had to plan something quick before graduation.
I started to take my music career more seriously and started doing shows around Florida, Atlanta, GA and Washington DC. Then I started selling my music albums across the country. I ended up selling about 100,000 albums which helped me pay my bills for the last five years. I since then started a clothing line called “BOSS” which also did very well. I was selling shirts like “hot cakes” and they were selling fast.
Here I am today to share my story. The journey still feels like it has just begun because although I am successful. The marathon continues.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Some of the struggles was when my mom passed away in 2015. It really almost shattered my dreams and I almost lost myself. I started going in the wrong direction and hanging with the wrong crowd of people. I just wasn’t there mentally I felt myself giving up. But the music saved me. It kept my head in game.
Please tell us about Built on Self Success (BOSS).
My company BOSS. We do “whatever it takes” but mainly, we are known for shirt sales and album sales. We also help people become entrepreneurs and we do motivational speaking and different high schools and elementary schools around the country.
What sets me apart from most people is that “I get to do what I want when I want” I am really my own BOSS! I get to travel when I want and travel for as long as I want. I make money in every city and state that I travel to and I’m just great at networking and making people feel special.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I would’ve saved that $141,000 scholarship until I really knew how to handle money. I wouldn’t have made some of the purchases I’ve made and I would’ve invested it better. I would’ve started my company sooner.
