Meet Caleb Hernandez of calebisnotokay in Southwest Alief

Today we’d like to introduce you to Caleb Hernandez.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My journey as an artist started in sixth grade when I found my mom’s old 1981 Casio CTK-401 keyboard. It barely worked, covered in dust from sitting in the attic, and I had no idea what I was doing. Little did I know that finding what I thought was a toy at the time would change my life completely. That small “toy” piano led to me learning a number of different instruments. I ended up teaching myself how to play guitar when I was 13 to impress my middle school crush, which didn’t work but at least I got a life skill out of it. A few years later, after making music for a while, I needed a new way to convey a message through my art discovered my love for photography and film thanks to my old AV teacher Mr. Alex Ortiz at Elsik High School. Film was a way for me to not only convey an emotion but tell a story. So here I am now, a small artist from Alief trying to not only express myself but hopefully help a few people along the way.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There’s been a lot of bumps along the way, a lot of failures, a lot of times I thought about giving up and finding something new. One of the biggest struggles for me though, and probably a lot of creatives, was trying to find that niche, that thing that makes you stand out, defines you. I feel that as an artist, it is important to make the type of art that is fully you and it should be something you are proud of.

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I create content under the artist name “calebisnotokay”. I make instrumental music from a plethora of genres, ranging from Alternative/Indie to R&B and Hip-Hop. Along with music, I am a filmmaker and photographer. I specialize in cinematography but mostly known for my music and videos. I am proud of the many things I’ve accomplished as an artist, such as is being able to produce the music for comedian Trevor Wallace’s podcast and winning multiple film festival awards, but the things I’m most proud of are the messages I get from people when they tell me how much my work resonated with them or how it helped them with something they were going through. I think that’s the main goal, if I can do that then I’m happy.

What were you like growing up?
I was very much the weird outgoing kid. Always talking and getting in trouble, typical kid stuff. I got a little quieter as I grew up but one thing that didn’t change was my love for all types of music. I developed an appreciation for different types of music at a young age. From my dad playing classic rock on the way to school to my mom playing R&B when she’d pick me up.
