Today we’d like to introduce you to Cameron Cody.
Cameron, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Around the age of three, I stumbled across an upright blue-colored piano in my neighbor’s garage, and truly, the rest is history. I had been given a gift of playing the piano by ear and there hasn’t been a day since that music didn’t soar from my heart. My parents quickly invested in piano lessons where I was classically trained but my favorite music was of the church, Broadway, gospel, and jazz styles. Twenty-seven years later, music has taken me around the U.S and to other parts of the world.
Currently, I host a weekly show on Facebook that welcomes thousands of visitors as James Kelly, a fabulous musician, and I play from two grand pianos in my home. I’ve also been very fortunate to be the Director of Music at Houston’s Chapelwood United Methodist Church, where I lead the 80 voice choir, the main heart of traditional music service.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Until COVID, the road of music and performance has always had its challenges but they were all fun and inspiring challenges to grow. Music brings a special bond between you and your listeners, which is so important to achieve. I want them to know that they are the focus when I am delivering a concert. In the COVID environment, survival has proven to be the biggest challenge any musician has faced as it has devastated the music community. Live music in the community faced an abrupt halt that severed the income that musicians relied on. Support your freelance artist and musicians any way you can during this time. I’m very fortunate that my primary job at Chapelwood United Methodist provides while my performing career is paused.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
Cameron Cody Music is a performance-based company. I currently have a duo album with James Kelly and a new solo piano album with a debut in September. Every week, via Facebook, and YouTube, we play live shows and also feature musician friends of ours periodically. I’m so appreciative of our listeners, supporters and followers. They are faithful and get our music literally out to the world. If I had to say one thing that sets us apart, is that during COVID, we have been able to continue to run totally online with our weekly concerts. Currently, we are working on two new projects with Grammy award-winning composer David T. Clydesdale. One will be premiered in Carnegie Hall in May 2021.
In August of 2020, we will premiere a concert titled “Festival of Pianos” with four grand pianos right from my living room. You can check it out on Facebook and YouTube channels for Cameron Cody Music.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory is spending time with my precious maternal grandmother, Grace Jennings. There is no way to describe the love, admiration and appreciation I had for her. She supported my music boldly and I miss her dearly. Thankfully the song “Amazing Grace” is simply at my fingertips and I can remember her daily.
