Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsea Watts.
Chelsea, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started djing three years ago. I quit my job as a waitress, left a long term relationship that I had been in and decided to do something I’ve ALWAYS wanted to do. I purchased my first laptop and DJ controller for about $600 total and sat in my room for hours practicing and watching YouTube videos. I worked tirelessly until people took me seriously. Prior to actually DJing, my love for music was so obvious. I would always be caught up on my laptop or phone downloading music and looking for new sounds. Eventually, when I felt comfortable enough to play records for other people I began to reach out to every promoter or DJ I could find. Some actually wrote back which I’m forever grateful for. I told friends and family and they all helped to put me on stuff as much as they could. I went through A LOT of trial and error, I learned pretty much everything on my own for the most part but one thing I never did was give up. I was determined to do what I love and be really successful st it so “No” or “Quitting” was not ever an option to me.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oh, most definitely not. It has been a tough experience, at times. One that came with a ton of lessons. The mental game is the hardest one to play when building from the ground up. Those talks that you have with yourself when you didn’t perform well or something went wrong or you lost money or just don’t have any money, yeah, those times are hard but they define you. I never let the hard times make me feel like this wasn’t for me. I always knew that it was I’ve always felt it. The biggest struggle was when I wasn’t making any money and people weren’t taking me seriously. I started off making $100/wk to making that an hour now because I didn’t give up. When people didn’t take me seriously because of how I looked, I made it a point to embarrass them and those thoughts about me.
Please tell us about your work.
Well, I am a DJ. An open format DJ, I can play anything from hip hop & r/b to reggaetone & Afro beats to jazz & classical. Literally, anything, any crowd, any event I can perform for and perform very well for, at that. I’m most proud of how fast I accomplished everything. Everything that I said I wanted to do, I have done or am about to do. I’m most proud of my dedication and diversity.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
One of my favorite memories from childhood is riding back home to Louisiana with my cousins and immediate family and listening to the music my dad would play in the car as he drove. The rides were like 13 hours long and my dad would always play his favorite jams current or throwbacks and I learned to love them and love music itself and love how it could bring everyone together & make them happy.
