Today we’d like to introduce you to Chloe Diaz.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As a first-generation law student, I struggled navigating the law school application process. I worked multiple gigs so I could afford applications and saw first-hand how testing, transcript, and application fees serve as a barrier to low-income minority students like myself. In an effort to uplift marginalized communities, I founded URMentor, a nationwide mentorship program and newsletter that connects 1st generation, women, and underrepresented minorities in undergraduate school with law students, as well as educational, volunteer, and job opportunities.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Manually operating a mentorship program and newsletter has presented a number of difficulties, such as lack of funding, long time commitments, and coding issues; however, I’m more than happy to bear the brunt of these issues if it translates to a better future for my and others’ disadvantaged communities.
Please tell us about URMentor.
URMentor is a nationwide mentorship program and newsletter that connects 1st generation, women, and underrepresented minorities in undergraduate school with law students, as well as educational, volunteer, and job opportunities. Unlike similar services that charge unreasonable fees, we’re a free, volunteer-based service that’s matched over 300 undergraduate students with over 150 law students and attorneys. We’ve also shared educational, volunteer, and job opportunities with over 1,000 undergraduate students.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Empathy is essential to the flourishing of this program.
