Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Rougerie.
Christina, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a Houstonian who moved to France and made my way through discovering the Interior Design world here, while keeping my roots and connection to the Design world in Houston. I am currently marketing my design services to expats who live here, as well as Houston clients, which also include e-design services. I have been in contact with a Houston builder for a potential collaboration. In addition, I started an online shop called SEEK, which is a collection of home decor & summer essentials I hand-picked personally, that buyers can shop at (Shameless self-promotion). The products include handmade pieces, antiques, flea market finds, and unique pieces. It’s been challenging to pick up and start all over when it comes to my career, much less in a completely different country and language. I hope my story inspires others to go after their dreams, no matter how difficult they may appear. The first step to success is stepping out of your comfort zone.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The language is by far the toughest challenge. I am currently finishing my intensive French language course (because yes, that’s a requirement). Next, would be starting my French side of the business. I had a dream to keep one foot in Houston and one foot in France, and it seems to be more challenging than I thought. But I still have hope as I work towards obtaining more clients in Houston so that I can bring my European flair to them across the waters.
Please tell us about your work.
Firstly, I would like to note as an interior designer, I love how interior design allows me to be creative and yet think critically about the space I’m working with. Well, as someone who services clients here in France, Basel – Switzerland and in the U.S. I know firsthand the challenges that come with an international move. Especially when there is a language barrier. For my European residence, I specialize in English speaking design services, whether they are a native or an expat moving in or investing in the servicing areas. I have partnered up with a reputable Alsacien home builder who has been in the construction industry for three generations. For my Houston residence, I provide e-design services. In addition, I have the necessary connections to work on projects satellite out of Houston. Whether my clients desire redesign ideas, paint color, renovation to building their dream home, I am here to help!
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
All my childhood memories involve growing up with four brothers and a sister. Being second to the oldest, I learned to always be alert and if it is too quiet something is not right! However, one memory I am fond of was when I went on a paint job sites with my dad. It taught me the value of hard work and taking a job from start to finish.
