Meet Christly Guedry of Bashful/Taylored in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christly Guedry.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve had a colorful professional journey with work in the world of beauty, theatre, and –yes– finance. In 2014, I graduated with a BFA in Acting from U of H and took off to Baton Rouge quickly after, where I worked on various movie sets in the burgeoning film scene. I found myself becoming disillusioned by the fickle nature of the industry and began to hone in on my love of makeup and skincare, which quickly transformed into a full-on hustle. After a year in Louisiana, I moved back to Htown determined to forge a new path. I now work as an independent makeup artist and in the financial industry as a Community Relations Ambassador (perhaps the thing that I’ve surprised myself most by as an ex-theatre kid who hates numbers). I dabble in improv. I am exploring my long-time passions of writing and styling through a personal Instagram and blog. There’s a sense that I’m, once again, on the verge of something new. I’m all at once thrilled and scared out of my mind.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’ve had some sh*t gigs, if I may be frank. I’ve worked so many retail hours on my feet that I have spider veins you’d expect to see on the legs of someone twice my age. I spent one year at a certain high-end boutique (whose name I shall not mention) where I felt often humiliated by my coworkers because of my “eccentric” interests. I’ve learned the hard way that I’m not everyone’s cup of tea–there’s nothing like a little time in an audition room to remind one of that. The thing is, as cliche as it sounds, I’ve done my best when I’ve marched to my own beat. That truth took time to reveal itself, though… I may or may not have gotten let go at that aforementioned boutique by doing it, but I would never have made any personal progress had I pretended to be someone else nor would I have been remotely happy.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
My specialty is crafting a look that is specific to my client’s desires and unique features. I pride myself in my commitment to learning and constantly evolving my own personal technique, without sacrificing the needs of the client. When you connect with me in person or on social media, you are getting an honest take on beauty and a glimpse into my other loves; a deep dive into my Instagram feed may help you find your new favorite dress on Amazon just as soon as you will find tips on getting your eyeliner just right. I am an open book, and–what’s more– I am passionate about being open and making connections in the realm of beauty and style. I consider no job completed without a touch of lipstick and wit.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was goofy, loud, and imaginative; the class clown that no one asked for. In 5th grade, I once ran a lap around the pavilion during recess shouting “I’m lactose-intolerant and I ate cheese,” because I thought it would be funny. I wanted to be all the things. I volleyed around dreams of being an astronaut and a dolphin trainer and a pop star. I suppose that’s why I went to theatre school; so I could do it all.
