Meet Clay Baron of Dave’s Loan in El Paso

Today we’d like to introduce you to Clay Baron.

Clay, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We started as a surplus store in the 1940’s. As the G.I.’s returned from World War II, our business transitioned into a pawnshop. Now, over 70 years later Dave’s is still family owned and operated. I am the fourth generation, and proud of it!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Every day presents new challenges or struggles to overcome. With the same vision and persistence that got us here today, we press on better and stronger than the day before.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Dave’s Loan Co. story. Tell us more about the business.
We are unlike any other pawnshop in town. Our specialties include many items and types of merchandise you wouldn’t usually expect to find at a pawn shop. We have a wide selection of freak show oddities, antiques, estate jewelry, Nazi regalia, and human remains among other things. Our greatest item is definitely Pancho Villa’s trigger finger. We are often asked how we know that it is real. I can assure you that the finger tastes like Pancho Villa.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I feel very lucky to run this pawnshop. Every day at Dave’s is an adventure full of new items, stories, and people. I have hours and hours of stories I could tell, and a few of them are actually believable! My favorite part of the business if helping those in need, and often times building a rapport with my clients that can last years. Although we are a business, much of who we are and what we do is for this community. It’s the stuff of legends.
