Today we’d like to introduce you to Cody Broderick.
Cody, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
inWhatLanguage was founded with one vision in mind: to connect people, no matter the country or culture they find themselves in. That vision evolved into a business and that business into a vehicle for global impact. At inWhatLanguage, we have an over-arching philosophy of giving back to the community both locally and globally. We believe in using our knowledge and abilities to benefit others in place of simply donating a percent of our revenue to charity. It’s more important to us to be involved in the community and to provide valuable service.
To this end, we developed an impact strategy aimed at utilizing language services to break down language and cultural barriers and bringing diverse communities together. We do this through providing language services at no cost to organizations working to assist English Language Learners.
A report by nprED stated that 1 in 10 public school students in the U.S. is learning to speak English. This group is categorized as English Language Learners (ELLs). Being able to communicate with and educate these ELL students–in English and other valuable school subjects they need to excel in life – is one of the main challenges in public education today.
We recognized this as an opportunity to step in and provide translations for critical documents and parent-teacher communications, to empower diverse, non-English speaking students and their families with the information and resources needed to build successful lives. By partnering with inWhatLanguage for translation services several local organizations, including the United Way of Salt Lake, the International Rescue Committee and the Utah Transit Authority have helped make our mission a reality. In total, we have translated 81,000 words at no cost to these and other organizations. The fair market value of the translations was $21,000.
We also contribute to communities affected by disasters. People in areas of the world that are affected by devastating hurricanes, violent earthquakes and deadly outbreaks of disease receive aid in the form of critical information translated by inWhatLanguage. However, language can be a substantial barrier for people of different nationalities responding to a disaster. To help bridge the divide, we have translated over 19,000 words for organizations assisting in disaster relief. The fair market value of the translations was $3,000.
We will continue to use our impact platform to make a difference for English Language Learners and Disaster Affected Communities.
Has it been a smooth road?
Growing our network of human linguists, will be our biggest challenge while trying to expand our services to new markets across the world. We must source and contract enough linguists to fulfill the demand for language services in the regions we will be expanding to. Assuring that these linguists meet our specific quality standards will be key to growth in international markets.
In addition, expanding our operational and project management teams will be critical challenges to overcome. Successfully doing so will allow us to fulfill the demand of increased language services.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
inWhatLanguage, a leader in impact-driven localization and translation technology, helps global organizations improve understanding and unify cultures and communities through applied language services. Our proprietary cloud-based translation management platform, UNIFY, along with our network of expert linguists connects brands, non-profits, NGOs and business entities, locally and globally.
inWhatLanguage was recognized as one of Utah’s 100 fastest growing companies by Mountain West Capital Network in both 2016 and 2017. During the 2017 awards ceremony, inWhatLanguage was also recognized as the most spirited company out of the group of 100 companies present, due to its enthusiastic culture. On a national scale, inWhatLanguage was ranked as the 39th largest language service provider in the U.S., according to Common Sense Advisory’s 2017 rankings. We also had the 7th highest growth rate in the U.S. and the 3rd highest growth rate when not considering acquisitions.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Companies looking to go global and penetrate international markets need to do so quickly while providing a native experience at every touch point of the customer journey.
inWhatLanguage is helping businesses succeed at this, having completed thousands of translation and localization projects and connecting millions of individuals in the process. They pride themselves on being a full-service language service provider, offering translation and localization services of any type and in any language.
In their spare time, inWhatLanguage has been making some noise from one of America’s exploding business metropolitan areas, ‘Silicon Slopes’. Known for rivaling ‘Silicon Valley’ in investment dollars per capita to technology companies, northern Utah has become a hub for information technology, software development and hardware manufacturing and research firms.
inWhatLanguage has wasted no time in getting recognized as a translation technology company in Silicon Slopes. In fact, in 2016, inWhatlanguage was recognized as one of Utah’s Emerging 8 companies by Utah Business and was also ranked as the 13th fastest growing company in Utah by Mountain West Capital Network. No small feat for a state full of technology juggernauts.
inWhatLanguage’s vision hasn’t changed since its foundation. We envision a world where language gaps are bridged and people are connected. They foresee a place where all people are brought together, no matter what language or cultural differences may exist. With UNIFY, they are helping companies make those connections and bridge those gaps. The goal is to help bring the world together.
