Today we’d like to introduce you to Corey Baum.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was born and raised in a small town in Northwest Ohio. Been a music lover my entire life. I found my strongest artistic voice in country music and I decided that I should move to a place steeped in country culture so I could learn it from the top to the bottom. Texas was that place and I’ve been here for ten years now.
Please tell us about your art.
I am a songwriter first, singer second guitar player 4th. Songwriting has always been an essential part of the way that I both process experiences as they come in, and how I express my feelings about those experiences on the way out. My personal goal as a songwriter has always been to work towards being able to fully express myself in song. Which is to say, when you first start writing, people generally write sad songs. Big dramatic events just tend to come easier in writing. I know my early work was definitely like that. But I want to be able to write about sad experiences and happy experiences and confusing experiences and big events and mundane events. All of it.
Lately, specifically my songs have been focused on my rising concerns with the inequality and economic insecurities of a growing number of Americans and individuals throughout the world.
Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
I don’t know if the roles of artists have changed but It does feel like the arts are under attack. Art is a fundamental part of the human experience so when you have leaders proposing that we cut funding to the arts, who are themselves uninterested and uninvolved in the arts and who marginalize the role that the arts play in society, there is a dysfunction there. But artists have power. We are one of the best weapons against hegemony because we follow our own muse. We create from a place of passion as opposed to a desire for profit. At this point in American society, the capitalists have grown accustomed to the fact that they can control everything through their dollar. Artists operating outside of that system cannot be controlled or reigned in.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
