Meet Crissy Welch of Casa D’Crissy Vegan Bakery in The Woodlands

Today we’d like to introduce you to Crissy Welch.

Crissy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Growing up, I always had a sweet tooth. Baked goods were always a solution to a bad day, it still is! When I had my oldest son, I started baking his birthday cakes, then my daughters. Honestly, my first cake wasn’t a nightmare but it also wasn’t perfect. I’m a bit of a perfectionist so not getting things right the first time really pushed me to educate myself and learn how to bake and decorate properly. I’ve taken shots at other businesses and failed. I did event planning, jewelry making, clothes customization. I’m pretty sure I could have succeeded with any of them but I never felt like I was making a difference. I’d get that feeling of wanting more and would move on to trying to figure out what that was. When we became vegan a few years ago, I saw the void in what was available to us as far as baked goods, cakes, cookies. We really couldn’t find much so I took what I had learned at home and grown to love(baking & veganism) and turned it into a business. I love being able to represent something I believe in wholeheartedly. Now, I raise my four children and run a vegan home bakery. Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?

There have definitely been a big learning curve. For me personally, it’s been dealing with the logistics of things. Dealing with the numbers, calculating costs per recipe and operating costs. Growing up a minority in NYC financial literacy wasn’t something we were taught. We were taught to get a good job, not run a company. So just learning about how to build and run a profitable small business has proven to be extremely difficult for me.

Please tell us about Casa D’Crissy Vegan Bakery.
Casa D’Crissy is a vegan bakery. It is run by my husband, Ibrahym Welch, and I. It is a family business so everyone does get involved, our son who is nine, designed our thank you cards and our daughter who is eight loves to bake as well! We sell cakes, cookies, cupcakes, cinnamon rolls, conchas and more. All of our products are made with compassion, we don’t use any products that come from or harm animals. Everything is dairy-free and egg-free. I love that we are able to bring great tasting quality products for everyone, vegan and non-vegan alike, to enjoy. Our treats are also as pretty as they are tasty. Showing that we can still enjoy the things we grew up loving in a compassionate way is my form of animal activism.

What role has luck (good luck or bad luck) played in your life and business?
I personally don’t believe in luck. I think that people go through the circumstances they need in order to become the person they are supposed to be. Everybody has a path, So while there can be negative things that have happened to me, they’ve also shaped who I am as a person. I love who I am and wouldn’t be able to have the empathy I have if it weren’t for those hard times I went through. The pressure of the earth creates diamonds. I also believe in the energy we put out that is reflected back to us.
