Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Smiley.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Photography was not my first choice. Growing up in Houston, I never thought I would become a graphic designer and a photographer, I’ve always seen myself working in the entertainment industry but as an entertainment lawyer. After sitting down and analyzing how much law school would be, I then realized, “Let me stick to my talents.”
My senior year of high school and the beginning of my college years was when I formed a passion for photography. After graduating from college, studying and majoring in graphic design, I always knew that photography was what interest me the most. Over the years, I had formed a love of being behind the lens, traveling, meeting new people, and collaborating on special artistic concepts with local artists.
Please tell us about your art.
Currently, I specialize in portraiture photography by using mainly outdoor natural lighting and different props whenever needed. Hopefully, as I perfect and continueto work on my craft, I really want to pursue an interest in fashion photography.
What do you think about the conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
I think the conditions for artists today are becoming much easier, especially for photographers. There are so many opportunities for local photographers to network and get plugged in. I’m happy that Houston produces such talented individuals to organize local photography meet-ups for anyone to participate in.
