Today we’d like to introduce you to Dawn Foster.
Dawn, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My journey to Marketing Consultant has been interesting. I’m definitely not where I thought I would be, but I’m fortunate enough to say that I absolutely love what I do.
I’ve always been a creative, and a planner. From a very early age, I wanted to be an interior designer and entered college as an Interior Design major. Unfortunately, but fortunately, I had a bad professor that basically convinced me that I didn’t have the vision and drive to be successful in the interior design program. So, in my second semester of college, I switched my major to graphic design communications with a marketing concentration, and off I went.
The bulk of the first ten years of my career, I worked solely on the design side of marketing and advertising. In 2012, I worked for a retail store, as part of an in-house design team, that was supported by and worked very closely with a marketing planning team. I was fascinated with the planning side, and how it played such a huge role in what was happening on the design side. That was the year that creativity and planning merged for me professionally. I began taking roles where I could work on the planning and strategy, but still, have input and influence on the design.
Shortly after the two came together for me, I realized that I was providing friends and family with tips on how to develop their brand, and put together a marketing strategy for their business, that fit their specific needs and budget. I was able to look at their business, their objectives, and their budget, and let them know what their best options are, as well as how to do it, the tools needed, where to start, etc. I loved that I was able to help these small business owners build their brand and grow their business.
So, I carved out my own lane, of being a Marketing Consultant that caters to small business owners, and be the marketing resource that they need to help them build their business. And here I am today.
Has it been a smooth road?
It’s been good so far. I think that is two things have contributed to my success along the way.
I don’t do anything that doesn’t feel right for me as a person or for my business. I let my faith and gut instinct drive my business forward.
I also have to my advantage, the stories of the mistakes that small business owners have made before they seek my consulting services. Having that knowledge allows me to learn and not repeat those same mistakes and to avoid those hurdles.
Those two things allow me to make smart decisions.
