Meet Debbie Taylor of Debbie’s Sweets & Treats

Today we’d like to introduce you to Debbie Taylor.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Debbie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up my family always did a lot of baking. I would watch my grandma and great grandma bake traditional Polish and European desserts. I always found it very interesting. We always baked for the holidays so baking became a favorite hobby of mine.

At first, I’d bake stuff just because I liked sharing it with family and friends but I kept having people tell me that I should start selling my baked goods. At first, I never really thought about doing it but then one day I figured why not try and see what happens? So that’s how Debbie’s Sweets & Treats came about.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
When starting any kind of business it’s never a smooth road. It’s a huge learning curve, especially when you bake from home. There are a lot of strict rules you must follow to be in compliance with the law. Such as having a food handlers license, product labeling, etc. My biggest struggle is balancing my full-time job, my family, and my little business. It’s a lot of give and take.

Some challenges are perfecting recipes and techniques to produce a product you’re proud to present to your client. It’s a lot of trial and error. A lot of practice, especially with the decorated sugar cookies. Sometimes I get frustrated and say “I’m going to stop doing sugar cookies “, but my husband, who is my biggest cheerleader, always says they look great and that I’m talented. That little motivation goes a long way to keep me practicing and learning.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Debbie’s Sweets & Treats story. Tell us more about the business.
Debbie’s Sweets & Treats does a little bit of everything. I do cupcakes, pies, cookies, loaf breads such as banana nut bread and pumpkin bread, and fudge. I think I’m most known for my banana nut bread and pecan pies, they seem to be my best sellers. I think what sets me apart from the others is I always try to do that little extra for my clients. I always try to exceed their expectations.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I think luck is what you make of it. If you work hard good things will come and opportunity will grow.
