Today we’d like to introduce you to Debi Balter.
Debi, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I began 35 years ago in the Northwest suburbs of Detroit, enjoying every minute! When my husband wanted to move to Houston 25 years ago, I said that would be great – as long as I could continue my business. I make creative centerpieces and transform a room into a design representing their theme. An example would be an African theme where we create a jungle at their location. I specialize in Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, Sweet Sixteens, special birthdays, retirements, and engagement. You define the event, I can create it. I love to come up with a new idea for every party. The most popular themes are; Hollywood, Broadway, Music and Sports, to name a few. My designs are always unique. Some of the more interesting themes have been ‘The Lightbulb’, ‘Alice Through the Looking Glass’ and ‘Books’. Bringing ideas like these to life has been both challenging and VERY rewarding. My greatest pleasure is to see a mom, who has worked with me every step of the way, gasp with amazement at seeing her vision come to life.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Reestablishing an existing business in a new town when you know no one.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Parties By Debi story. Tell us more about the business.
My business is to create a family’s vision into a reality. Examples are; creating a wonderland for “Alice in Wonderland” or building a library for a book theme… We specialize in making custom signs, place cards and entries to bring the theme to life. You verbalize the event, I bring it to life. This creative process is what I love the most about my business. The designs are always done in a unique way. I have done several events for the same family, as many as 5 for one family. A returning mom knows that she can call us with a date, a theme, and a budget and we will take care of everything. I have been able to bring out ideas from children when the parents have not been successful in doing so. These are just some of the reasons I LOVE my business. Every event is new! We even do the out-of-towner welcome baskets to help get your visiting guests into the fun of the week-end. From the opening welcome event through the good-bye brunch, we work with our clients hand-in-hand. Our internet business has taken us around the world. We have shipped decorative items as far away as London, England, China and Sydney, Australia as well as every state in USA.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck has not played any part in my business. Our creativeness and hard work for and with our clients is what has made us successful… You will never walk into a room I’ve decorated and say “I’ve seen this before”. Word of mouth has been our best advertising.
