Meet Dee Moore of Fashionable And Thick Foundation and The Dorcas Collection

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dee Moore.

Dee, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started my journey with Fashionable And Thick In 2011, after being in a physical and emotionally abusive relationship, During the course of the relationship, my weight was always one of the arguments. I would be called all sorts of names I care not to mention… but it was that one phrase that I can still hear in the back of my mind that is the driving force behind what I have created. That one phrase was “You FAT UGLY B*%”! I’ve always known I was pretty in the face, but I was overweight and ugly on the inside. I started to think are their others who also have to endure FAT SHAMING? Something had to be done to change the way I was looked at as well as others of the plus community. I took the word FAT and turned into something positive… Fashionable and Thick a body positive movement which focuses on changing the negative connotations associated with one’s size.

Now, there’s more to this story… I’m just getting started (lol). I’ve always been into fashion, just didn’t know what my niche was. I’ve coordinated fashion segments and in-store presentations (Nzuri Hair & Fashion Show, Cato’s Fashions, Avenue Plus & Lane Bryant).

In 2015, I produced my own fashion showcase “Glamour Glitz & Curves”, to showcase designers, retailers, and models of the plus community. This show was a sell-out, with over 400 guests. During this showcase process and growth, “The Dorcas Collection” was birthed. Dorcas, my birth name given by my father, which can be found in Acts 9;36. The collection contains boutique items as well as a few custom pieces. Not only has the collection been seen on the runway of “Glamour Glitz & Curves”, but it has also been seen in FFFWEEK (Full Figured Fashion Week) Silver Fox Showcase In June 2018, in New York City.

The road has not been easy, but this is my passion and after seven years, I am proud to say Fashionable And Thick is now recognized as a 501c3 organization. (The Fashionable and Thick Foundation) and although sales may not be where I want them at the moment, the Dorcas Collection has had a couple of loyal clients and photographers that have allowed me to work as a personal stylist for their desired look. For that, I am grateful!

Has it been a smooth road?
Definitely not a smooth road at all. Sales for both the T-shirt line and boutique go up and down… sometimes, there have been no sales at all for months and the desire to create new has been a challenge due to funding. Especially with Fashionable And Thick a lot of my personal funds go into this because the cause means a great deal to me and I would do anything to help spread the word about Fat Shaming and its effects.
