Today we’d like to introduce you to Deidre Backus.
Deidre, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always been pulled towards a more creative lifestyle. Although I resisted for many years, life took me in many directions. Starting a family was not easy, and finishing school was challenging when I was unsure of my path. Today, I am pushing myself every day as an artist in order to grow, succeed, and empower. I completed school with a Bachelors of Art in Graphic Design, although photography still holds precedence when I create in any medium. Technology has allowed me to combine many passions into a bigger career than I have ever imagined.
Owning my own business without failure is very unrealistic. I began with portrait photography six years ago and yet not a complete success, it did push me to go back to school for graphic design. Which opened so many doors for me as an artist. Today I work for myself and hope to grow within the strong art community we have. Choosing to freelance or run a business as an individual can be challenging without the support of a community that understands those challenges. I am so proud to be from Houston.
I began my career as a business owner, but I developed within a small design company in Houston when I first graduated from the Art Institute. The company was a start-up as well and I would never trade that kind of education for anything. I was challenged daily to learn more, communicate more, and want more for myself. I’ve grown out of my shell and pushed the limits of my skills in order to create in my own way. Now I stand confident that starting a new company that combines all my skills will forever be the best decision for me. I may succeed and fail throughout the many years to come, but I will forever continue to evolve.
I am the owner of Deidre Lee Studio as of January of 2018. I am a graphic designer and a photographer. Being in a creative career truly allows me to bring all my passions into one. My graphic design allows me to create for many different industries and my photography allows me to capture memories that will last. My photography has evolved into a more specific industry this year. Adding equestrian photography is the perfect example of bringing my passions together. You can see my work at www.equinecharm.com.
I enjoy being a business owner for the fact that I can share my skills with so many different people for the sole purpose of creating a connection, seeing the joy in their faces and hopefully inspire them to be creative as well.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Life is full of challenges. My first approach to running a business was not successful in the end as much as I had wanted. It turned into a blessing in disguise as it only created a drive in me to be more ready the next time. I chose to finish school with an art degree. This path was not the original and I have learned over time that there is no such thing as one path to success. Failing has a new meaning. It is more of a change or chance to make a new path.
Communication has never been my best friend, but when I can communicate about what I am most passionate about. The fear and anxiety of speaking go right out the window. I chose a career in the end that was best suited for me.
I am my own worst critic. Which only pushes me to be better and stronger. I’ve learned to accept criticism and understand what can be learned from it. Being perfect all the time is not a realistic goal, but being relentless is something I would rather strive for.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Deidre Lee Studio – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Deidre Lee Studio is a one-woman artist owned business. I hope to grow with more designers in the future as more opportunities demand more growth. I specialize in graphic design, web design, and photography for many different industries.
My photography has turned a new venture this year in equine photography. I have always loved horses and how magical a bond between a horse and rider can be. I’ve learned over the years that such a bond takes dedication and understanding. I’ve seen horses with difficult backgrounds, change their whole demeanor when one finds the right forever home.
I am proud of what this business means for me. It is my passion, my dedication, and my strength. I can offer that to my clients. I am also proud that as a company I can help create memories, opportunities and future growth.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I look forward to growing as a company and as a person. I look to the future for more experiences and to develop my skills as an artist. Having a future that allows me to support my family is all I could ever ask for.
