Today we’d like to introduce you to Devin Harvey.
Devin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was introduced to make-up by my Uncle’s wife. She told me about Mac Cosmetics when I was pursuing my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Houston and working as a Mail Carrier for the USPS. I was never a big makeup person, in fact, growing up, I was a total tomboy. I decided to check out the store to see what it was all about and I was intrigued. My love for makeup started to grow from there. I applied and was hired by MAC. This is where my foundation was built. After working there a couple of years and freelancing for them for a few more, I decided to branch out on my own in 2008. I attended bridal shows, created a portfolio and website and had word of mouth to help me grow. I networked with others in the beauty industry as well. The bulk of my clients are bridal and special occasion.
I also always wanted to work in the commercial and print industry, but didn’t know how to get my foot in the door, especially living in Houston. I took a class by Crystal Wright and she introduced me to an agency run here in Houston. I worked there for two years and was able to do obtain a lot of knowledge along with commercial and print experience. I’m blessed to be able to say that I’ve done quite a bit in my career and have had experiences that I never would have dreamed of having. I’m very thankful that I get to do what I love for a living. My motto for my business is: “I provide a personalized makeup experience for my clients based on their vision for themselves.”
Has it been a smooth road?
It is definitely not a smooth road. There are slow seasons where you have to figure out how to budget. The industry can also be cutthroat and unwilling to divulge “secrets”. I don’t know if it’s for fear of their job being taken or what. You also have to constantly reinvent yourself and remain relevant. When I started doing makeup, Youtube and Instagram weren’t really a thing yet. Makeup has exploded and those with more followers and likes will definitely be more noticed. I’m more old school, so it is harder for me to adjust to sharing so much. The business side of being self-employed is also tricky. You have to figure out bookkeeping, taxes, retirement, savings and so on.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Devin Harvey Makeup – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I’m a Makeup Artist. I have done hair when I worked for the agency, but it was minimal. My forte is beauty makeup. I provide both traditional and airbrush makeup services to my clients. I also airbrush any blemishes on the body that my clients would like to have covered. I apply strip and individual lashes. I’m proud that 11 years later, I am still able to do what I love. I’m proud for stepping out of my comfort zone and trying new things in my career. I’m proud that I seek knowledge and am not afraid to learn new things, even if others aren’t willing to share, I find it. I believe that my clients should look like a beautifully enhanced version of themselves. I don’t believe in really heavy, caked on makeup. I want my clients to look in the mirror at themselves and be wowed!
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love how diverse my city is. I hate the construction and traffic.
