Today we’d like to introduce you to Diana De Leon.
Diana, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started working in the Information Technology field after I graduated from the University of Houston which was a huge accomplishment because I am fully deaf and use American Sign Language to communicate. I stayed with my oil & gas corporation for ten years. With my ten years at Cameron, I dealt with web development, database administration, and Information Security. I decided to stay home after my youngest was born because I wanted to spend time and raise my young sons. I fell in love with cake decorating when I was looking to make a cake for my oldest’s first birthday. I was making cakes for my family and friends for several months after his first birthday.
Then I was unable to do any cakes after I got pregnant with my second due to severe morning sickness, so I resorted to looking at pretty cakes on Pinterest and cake decorating blogs. I was overwhelmed with two kids after my youngest was born then my husband had to move to another state for work. It was a tough period because I was also dealing with lingering postpartum depression and I craved something to help me to go through the motions of being a stay at home mom and to use my Information Technology skills that I had acquired from college and working. So I decided to create Find Your Cake Inspiration in 2016 while staying at home with an infant and toddler with my husband away to showcase gorgeous cakes from all over the world and to spread inspiration around. It wasn’t until 2018 when I started using Instagram to post inspiring cakes on my feed. I was finally able to jump back in the cake decorating in early 2019 after my husband was back home and everything wasn’t so overwhelming.
Has it been a smooth road?
I struggle to find time to dedicate to my blog and Instagram content because I’m a full-time stay at home mom, so it’s the first priority of mine to take care of everyone in my household and keep the household running smoothly. I’m not far into my blog as much I would like to but I’m slowly building it and creating content (making cakes which also takes up some of my time). I try to set aside an hour every day for my blog/social media accounts but I mainly focus on my family. As my kids grow older and independent, then I can have more time to focus on my blog and creating content. I also struggle with my Instagram stories using videos (such as talking about products I receive for brand collaborations) on my social media because I am deaf but I recently did an unboxing of products in pure ASL and I got a huge & overwhelming response to my video. I probably will do more but I am shy in front of a camera! LOL.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Find Your Cake Inspiration – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
As for my blog, I mainly do round-ups of specific cake decorating themes and I ask bakers for permission to share their amazing work and I continue to post inspiration on my Instagram and Pinterest. I now include my own content (my own cakes) that I create from the baking community collaborations on Instagram and more. I also work with select brands to advertise their products on my cakes on Instagram and my blog. I like to think that sharing cake inspiration on my blog and all of my social media channels somewhat helps people to discover new talent or use inspiration for their own cakes. I’ve really enjoyed connecting with amazing bakers on social media and there is so much talent out there! I’m having a lot of fun creating cakes and as of now, I don’t have any plans to turn my hobby into a business but maybe one day! But of now, I am happy being a blogger/influencer with a love for the cake decorating!
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love Houston because it’s one of the most diverse cities in the United States and the Houstonians always come together in the face of tragedy. Hot & humid weather, mosquitoes, and traffic are the least I like about Houston!
