Today we’d like to introduce you to Diaraye Diane.
Diaraye, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a hairstylist and MUA. I have been doing hair for about seven years since I was 16 years old, and makeup for two years now. I have always had a love for the beauty industry, and once I received my license, I knew that is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I first began just doing ethnic hair, then I realized I wanted to reach a bigger audience. I then soon started my business selling virgin hair, lashes, wigs, hair accessories, and all-natural hair care products. After I decided to reach an even bigger audience, I learned how to get more comfortable doing all hair and skin types, and now I do a wide range of services for all ethnicities and hair textures. I love hair and makeup so much because I love being able to make someone feel beautiful in their skin. I find much joy in seeing people’s reactions when they step out my chair. My journey to owning my own studio salon, where I will offer all of my products and services to my diverse clientele has been quite enlightening. I have learned so much about myself, my values, business, and the change I want to see not only in my community, but in the world. I want to provide a place where everyone will feel free and comfortable and walk out confident and even more beautiful shining their light in this world.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t. While trying to build myself up as an entrepreneur, I was also A full-time student working two jobs, not including the side hustle of doing hair while also trying to maintain a social life. I received my degree, Bachelors of Business Administration, in December of 2018. Looking back, I honestly don’t know how I maintained it all. I kept myself busy, and I still had to handle all the curve-balls life was throwing at me. From friendship to relationship drama, family issues, joining a sorority and trying to maintain my grades and a lot more, I was trying to stay afloat, and by the grace of God I did.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Hair Lair – what should we know?
Right now, my business sells virgin hair, lashes, wigs, hair accessories, and all-natural hair care products. After I decided to reach an even bigger audience and learning how to get more comfortable doing all hair and skin types, I now do a wide range of services for all ethnicities and hair textures. I specialize in weave installations, wigs, makeup, men and women braids, haircuts, color and balayage services. I am most known for my wigs, weave installations, and my makeup services. My dream that I will accomplish is to have my own studio salon where I will offer all of my products and services to my diverse clientele where everyone will free and comfortable and walk out confident and even more beautiful. I feel that makes me different because once I open my own location, customers will be able to see the genuine spirit behind my business. I do this for the pure joy of making people feel happy and confident.
