Meet Doug Mansfield of Mansfield Marketing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Doug Mansfield.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I worked in sales following separation from the military in 1995. Sales roles transitioned into marketing in 2004 when my employer became my first client as I decided to go into business for myself. In that transition I worked as the marketing director for a Houston law firm and marketing manager for a major Houston contractor. In 2010 Mansfield Marketing was established and today we specialize in B2B marketing for regulated industries such as, oil/gas, medical, legal, environmental, and industrial.

Today Mansfield Marketing employs 5 people, all experts in their field, and services small to medium sized business clients. Our core services are centered around search marketing and establishing our clients as institutions within their industries online.

Volunteering to teach workshops for small business owners started in 2011 when I became a Google Certified Small Business Trainer. A curriculum of business marketing workshops was created and presented at The University of Houston Small Business Development Center (SBDC) by Doug which continues today. I also teach for SCORE Houston, the Harris County Public Library and on occasion through Lone Star College.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth? Not even close. I sometimes reflect that if someone had shown me a list of the hardships I would endure and consequences of mistakes made that I would never have started. Of course, now I can see there was no other path that could have lead me and this company to where we are now. Now I embrace mistakes as learning opportunities and endeavor to examine and not repeat them.

One tough lesson was employees. We now offer a salary and benefits package beyond what most small companies provide. It did not start that way. When I tried to save money in that area the result was an unstable environment for my company and clients.

That was years ago and today I understand the value of keeping happy and loyal employees. That also means having enough people-power to avoid overburdening employees. We enjoy reasonable workloads and ample paid time off. As a result, our clients receive a better quality of service.

Mansfield Marketing – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We specialize in B2B marketing where complex products and services and long sales cycles are the norm. Strategies that work for consumer sales simply do not work here. Our clients are in the oil, gas, medical, legal, industrial, and environmental industries.

Our Key Performance Indicator (KPI) dashboard system was built from the ground up to serve our particular clients. Television monitors in our Downtown Houston office keep track of each of our client’s KPI with 12-month trailing trends. We don’t wait for monthly reports to discover changes. Our finger is on the pulse at all times and each dashboard is shared with our clients.

Mansfield Marketing is a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Verified Veteran-Owned Small Business. We are a Google Certified Partner, BBB A+ rated business, and in 2017 we received Houston BBB’s highest Pinnacle Award for best Marketing/Advertising company in Houston, and Doug Mansfield is a member of the Forbes Agency Council.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
In May of 2017 all of our employees attended the Houston BBB awards luncheon hoping to receive another Winner of Distinction award, as we had done previously. Instead, we were called out to receive the Pinnacle Award, the BBB’s highest award given to only one Houston company in the category of marketing, advertising, and promotions. Now I will be looking for another in 2018 and beyond.
