Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Ana Veronica Rodríguez.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born and raised in El Salvador, where I lived with my parents until I was 26 years old. I’m very family oriented, coming from a family of 7 with 5 siblings. When the time came to decide what I wanted to do for a living the decision was easy, I always wanted to become a physician. Shortly after completing medical school I moved to the US in order to continue my medical education. I started my residency in Family Medicine at the North shore LIJ residency program in Bayshore, NY. During my residency, I met the love of my life and we got married in 2009. In 2011 I completed my residency and moved to Houston. When I first joined MD Medical Group I was hired as a Family Medicine physician at one of our Mi Doctor offices. By the end of 2014 I was named Chief Medical Officer of MD Medical Group. I currently reside in Houston with my husband, 2 daughters, Mia (6) and Olivia (2), and our 2 dogs.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
When I was 14 years old I suffered a terrible accident. There was a gas explosion in my house and 89% of my body’s surface suffered from 2nd and 3rd degree burns. I was treated at Shriners Burn Institute in Galveston.
I had to endure several treatments until I was 21 years old. Since the accident occurred, I have always been surrounded by doctors, nurses, and support staff at several hospitals. I will always be grateful with the care I was provided. This life changing experience also motivated me to become a doctor so I could treat and help all in need.
In 2016 once more I had a great challenge I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer, fortunately it was stage 1 and after a battle with chemotherapy and surgeries with my husband at my side as my best supporter I can say I’m Cancer Free! and a stronger person with faith knowing that I can do everything I want in life.
As a foreign medical graduate, its hard the process to be accepted in the US, the boards exams are hard and very stressful. But hard work paid off.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the MD Medical Group story. Tell us more about the business.
MD Medical Group started in 2007 with the acquisition of two Clinicas Mi Doctor Family Medicine practices.
Our founder Dr. Gonzalo Venegas, created a combined effort to help the community gain access to high quality and accessible primary care medical services. With the financial backing of Investar Financial, we continue to increase our presence in the DFW and Houston areas by opening more locations and by strengthening our current medical provider network.
Our open-access focus accommodates every patient that comes through our doors without the necessity of booking an appointment.
We are now running under 3 branches: Clinicas Mi Doctor, MD Family Clinic, and MD Kids Pediatrics.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
All of what life has offered me, regardless of the challenges, have been a blessing.
