Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Angela Jones.
Dr. Jones, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born in Hialeah, Florida and moved to Houston, Texas at the age of 4. My mother, sister, and I moved to Houston and lived with my aunt and cousins in Alief, Texas. My mother and aunt were working mothers who instilled in us the importance of family and education. I was the youngest at that time between my sister and cousins, and they protected and shielded me to ensure I was focused on my school work. My mother constantly sacrificed herself to ensure that I was able to participate in extracurricular activities without worry. My sister was my biggest cheerleader and would often “stand in” as my guardian while my mom balanced two jobs and nursing school. These early years taught me about family sacrifice, courage, and hope.
I was involved in activities that spanned from volleyball, dance, art club, track, Tae Kwon Do, and so much more. Though I enjoyed all of these activities, it was not until my 10th-grade year at Alief Hastings High School when I took the first psychology class that I realized there was something else out there in the world for me. I can vividly remember reading my psychology book and feeling like I was reading about people in my community and family. I was able to see the sadness, dysfunctions, mindset, and so much more in the people I surrounded myself with inside my textbook, and it all suddenly made sense. I continued this journey my majoring in psychology, obtaining a master’s in clinical psychology, and earning my doctorate in counseling education.
While obtaining my doctorate, I was able to give birth to my amazing daughter Zoe with my college sweetheart and husband Dallas Jones. The birth of my daughter was what I would consider my “second awakening”. Giving birth to her during my doctorate program logistically seemed “simple” (yes you can laugh at me), but clearly, that was not the case. I was not prepared for how an infant would make me question who I was, what I wanted in my life, and what I wanted my legacy to be. I wanted to, first, be a pillar of hope and encouragement for my family, and also help others not feel ashamed about what they were feeling and to understand themselves sexually.
I developed my practice, Get Centered Counseling & Consultants, LLC., in 2017 and in just one year, I have been able to create a practice that is flourishing and growing day by day. I provide cognitive behavioral therapy combined with Reality/Choice therapy to adult and adolescent clientele with a wide range of emotional, behavioral, and sexual problems such as sexual dysfunctions, behaviors, and addictions. In addition, I have been invited to conferences, fairs, panels, and universities to deliver lectures on various aspects of mental health. Currently, my practice is located inside Heritage Behavioral Consultants, LLC which is a group practice of independent contractors in the Houston area.
I plan to continue growing locally and to be recognized for not only my therapeutic services but also is known as a source of healing for people nationwide.
Has it been a smooth road?
If one can say their journey to success was smooth I can confidently say they are not being truthful. However, I can say that my road would have been a lot rougher if I did not put my head up high and thank God for his grace.
My struggles merely became mirrors to who I was and what I was capable to withstand. Struggles stemming from a lack of resources to losing my home in 2017 due to Hurricane Harvey. Listing my struggles would be a grueling and long passage that would highlight memories in my past that I now hold near and dear to me. For the sake of this interview, I can say with confidence that there were times I thought I was losing my mind and sanity. My road of struggles is not over, but my past struggles have equipped me enough to know that whatever or whoever decides to come my way should think twice. I am prepared and twice as nice (yup I rhymed).

In addition, I have been invited to conferences, fairs, panels, and universities to deliver lectures on various aspects of mental health. I am most proud of being a speaker at the Metamorphosis Conference in April 2018 to speak on the topic of sex to an audience consisting of thousands of women from all walks of life. This moment helped me see and assured me that I was on the right path.
I think as a therapist what sets me apart is that I aim to be transparent and authentic to all my clients. It is important to be who I am in all settings. I want all my clients to feel safe and warm when they are in my presence and while they are obtaining therapy. Everyone that enters into my office should feel as though I am providing them my very best.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Houston is a diverse city that encompasses cultures from all over the world. It is refreshing that you can drive through Houston and experience this diversity by witnessing the variety of people, restaurants, street signs, festivals, districts, and so on, and feel welcomed and right at home in all of these areas. Houston is like its own country.
What I like least is the constant street construction and the heavy flooding.
