Today we’d like to introduce you to Drew Washington.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Drew. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am the head trainer and owner of Team Body Of Work Fitness, also known as TBOW Fitness. To fully understand the passion and desire I have for personal fitness and the success of my business, I need to take you back to before it all started. I have always been a competitor at heart and a fitness enthusiast because of my love for sports growing up. I received a full-ride scholarship to Louisiana Tech University for basketball my junior year of high school. After obtaining my bachelor’s degree in Sociology, I was offered the opportunity to go play overseas basketball. I declined the chance to go in order to be present for the birth of my son. I moved back to Houston, where I’m originally from, in order to find employment to support myself and my son. Life has a funny way of throwing you off tracks until you find the one you’re supposed to ride out. Not too long after the birth of my son, I was laid off from my newfound job. So, there I was; a new dad, jobless, stuck and confused and searching for a positive outlet to uplift my spirits. I started to lift weights in my garage during the day to make the time pass until I realized how passionate I became about the art of gaining muscle mass. Playing basketball all my life left me with the typical basketball build: tall, lean, agile and an abnormally fast metabolism that made it feel impossible to put on weight.
For about two years, I lifted weights daily, ate the same prepared foods and researched fitness and nutrition in order to gain as much knowledge as I could. Eventually, family members and friends would see me out and it was always the same reaction; “Drew? Is that you? What have you been eating?!” I had packed on about 40 pounds of pure muscle and started to look like a different person. The enamored looks eventually turned into questions about how I could help them transform. I started with minimal equipment in my empty garage gym training people for FREE. I heard the saying once, “find something you love to do and figure out how to make money doing it.” Once I started charging, I was able to purchase more equipment to invest more into what was slowly but surely becoming Team Body Of Work Fitness. Before I knew it, I was a fully functioning personal training studio based in the garage of my home. My clientele began to grow rapidly due to the many transformations that took place in the garage gym. I eventually outgrew my home garage and moved into a large warehouse building to serve clients on a higher scale. I have been doing what I love for seven years now and have helped transform hundreds of people who came with hopes of changing their lifestyles. My philosophy is simple: the amount of work you deposit is directly correlated to the results you withdraw. In a growing sea of personal trainers all trying to get bigger than the next, I just hope to stand out for my genuine love for health and fitness and the joy I receive from seeing my clients transform before my eyes. My goal is to help as many people as I can challenge themselves in order to accomplish personal goals they may have thought were impossible.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wouldn’t exactly say the road was shiny paved for me, however, I wouldn’t change a thing. The saying goes anything worth having is worth fighting for and that’s the honest truth. I felt like before I saw the makings of Team Body Of Work coming to life, I had no idea what path in life I was supposed to be on. I was jobless, I was lost and I was starting to feel like things were falling apart when in actuality things were just beginning to fall together.
Please tell us about Team Body Of Work Fitness, TBOW Fitness – what should we know?
My mindset in life is to work hard for things that you want to accomplish and I approach work each day with a full heart and a ready to work philosophy. I try to instill the same mindset in each and every one of my clients as they walk in my door. I tell them all that you will get out of this exactly what you put into it. That means if you show up every day ready to put in work, no complaints, and a “go hard” mentality, then the results you desire are right around the corner. On the flip side, if you expect the results to come without working for them, or while giving minimal effort, you will be met with the harsh reality that good things don’t come to those that don’t work for it. I specialize in personal and small group training where I am able to give undivided attention to individuals looking to make serious life and health changes. What I’m most proud of about my business is that I refuse to get caught up in the “hype”, the fad, or the wave of new up-and-coming fitness industry that showcases big results in the blink of an eye. I keep it real at Team Body Of Work and I implement an understanding of hard work and SUSTAINABLE, healthy lifestyles that will allow my clients to meet and exceed their goals well beyond their time with me.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I attribute the success of my business to my ability to persevere and not lose sight of my reality despite what others may see. Throughout the years, while I was growing TBOW Fitness, I had plenty of people ask me questions like, “why don’t you get a “real job”, “does this work allow you to provide for your growing family” and “do you see yourself doing this long-term”? I never let the negative comments, questions or stares make me lose sight of the goal I had in mind and so I keep pushing. Each year, I have seen my business grow more and more beyond not only my own expectations but well beyond the expectations of others who were just sitting back watching and waiting for my demise.
