Meet Dylan Allen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dylan Allen.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve been creating stories for as long as I can remember. I’ve been an avid reader since I was big enough to hold a book. And when my passion for reading brought me to the genre of contemporary romance, I found a real camaraderie with the stories that I was reading.

But, I also wanted to see more diversity and honesty in the genre- so I decided to try publishing some of my own stories. Twenty months later, I am getting ready to publish my sixth full-length novel. Independent Publishing has allowed me to set my own deadlines, decide what stories to tell, and how.

It’s been an amazing journey that is the hardest work I’ve ever done. It is also, by far, the most gratifying.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, it has not. When I first started, I was also working full time. Writing is only half the battle. The publishing aspect is grueling and very time-consuming. So, I have been tired for about two years straight.

It’s also very expensive, and I spend a lot of money to publish high-quality books on a consistent schedule. My fifth book was the only one, so far to turn a profit, but it also changed the tide for me. So it’s been hard, but I love it and wouldn’t do anything else.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I’m a writer and publisher of contemporary romance. I think my readers would say the thing that makes my stories different is that I don’t follow a formula. I write real, but aspirational characters and I try to make my stories current and relevant.

I’ve written love stories about everyone from the children of Enron’s dastardly leadership to undocumented immigrants. I hope to use my voice for good.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have gotten marketing help much earlier. Learned about branding and advertising so that I could have made my earlier books more marketable. But I am course correcting now.
