Meet Edward Skinner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Edward Skinner.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was born in San Diego, California & moved to Houston when I was 10 years old. I attended Lamar High School, where I played football. my senior year, I realized just how much I hated it, so I quit my senior year. I’ve had a passion for music & visual artistry my entire life, but I suppressed it throughout those years out of insecurity. It wasn’t until I entered college at Texas Southern University, & then dropped out two years later, that I said, “fuck it,” & just started doing what I wanted to do. It wasn’t until a year a few years after that that I picked up my passion for photography. I picked it up during a very hard time in my life. I was extremely depressed & on the verge of self-harm, & one day I just started taking photos on my iPhone to keep myself sane, and my mind off of what was going on in my life at the moment. During that same time, I began picking up Dj’ing. I’ve ALWAYS had love for music, and to me, DJ’ing was my way of expression & sharing music I love & come across. Over the years, I’ve put in so many hours & times into my craft because I truly love it so much. I will always continue to do so.

Please tell us about your art.
I’m a DJ, photographer, & overall multidisciplinary being. With photography, I’d like to think that I have the power to make time stand still. It’s like having a physical time machine in your hands. With sound selection and DJ’ing, it’s such a broad way of creativity. For me, I do it to express myself through music that resonates, that I find, & that I love. The way music can save lives & make people feel such a variety of emotions makes me love it even more. When I’m DJ’ing, I feel like I’m helping people forget about whatever stresses or bullshit they came in with. It’s a powerful responsibility, & I’m grateful to be in such a position to make people feel good.

As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
I define success by how happy you are, how successful the people around you are, & how grounded you stay once you start to reach all of the goals you’ve always wanted to reach. Your character & how you treat people along your journey mean more than how talented you may be. Simply being a good person will take you farther than anything else.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
people can see my work via 9thsage.co, which has every single link to every single part of my creative passions, both DJ’ing & photography.
