Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Chan.
Erica, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am a pediatric trauma nurse by day and a foodie/traveler by night. When I am not putting bandaids on sick kiddos, I am in search of the newest Instagram food craze or a scenic view.
In 2017, I created an Instagram to capture all the delicious meals and treats in the Houston area. Coffee shops, taco trucks, or ice cream shops – I was there to capture it at its best! However, after graduating in 2018 with my bachelor’s of science in nursing, my passions were split between food, travel, and nursing. Thus, scrubsandgrubs was created!
Scrubsandgrubs is now a passion project used to motivate new nurses like myself and combine my love for food, travel and nursing. Along with my Instagram, I have also started a travel blog (scrubsngrubs.com), where I will be posting nursing advice, recommendations for Houston restaurants, and travel guides!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. With the amount of food blogs in Houston, it’s hard to get a following. However, after switching to more of a lifestyle blog, I found an outlet where I can talk about food, travel, and most importantly nursing. I have been able to put a spotlight on nursing, showing both the highlights and the difficulties. I found that there are many other nurses who feel the same way and was able to form a community! There have been struggles, but the community that I gained has made it worth it.
Scrubsandgrubs – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Scrubsandgrubs is an Instagram page focused on nursing, eating, and traveling. It was created as a passion project to highlight my favorite restaurants, highlight traveling, and motivate nurses like myself. Houston is a huge hub for nursing and to create a page where nurses can see talk about what they’ve experienced is important to me. I think that the mix of nursing, food blog, and travel blog sets me apart from other Instagram pages.
I am most proud of my new website: scrubsngrubs.com – where I’ll be posting travel blogs of places I have been and places I’ll be going.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
My definition of success changes constantly. At work, success is making sure that my patients receive the best quality of care. In my personal life, success is correlated to my happiness. For Instagram, if my posts can motive, inspire, or relate to anyone, then scrubsandgrubs is a total success!
