Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabrielle Henderson.
Gabrielle, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve always had this notion that I wanted to become a nurse. From 5th grade up until my senior year of high school (literally six months before I graduated) I just knew I would attend college, nursing school, and then I’d be on my way to save lives. That is until I took an anatomy class and realized blood makes me faint, and I’m actually a raging germaphobe. Go figure. Once I figured out that nursing wasn’t actually my passion, I had to think long and hard about what it is that I’m actually good at. I went to a college fair at lonestar and thats when I saw a booth for a cosmetology school. I went up to the representative and picked her brain for a bit and then went home to do some research of my own. I set up my appointment for a tour of Paul Mitchell the School and the rest is history!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not.
I’ve always known I wanted to specialize in color, so in order to become the best I needed to learn from the best. In the hair industry, you really have to crawl before you walk. The apprenticeship programs are no joke. I apprenticed at two different salons over a span of two years, and then I was offered a stylist position at another salon. Everything was great! ..until it wasn’t. At that point, I decided I wanted to go into business for myself. So In March 2016, I signed a lease for a salon suite and Hues by Gabrielle was born. I literally had MAYBE 3 clients and have had to really work hard, expand my knowledge, and be persistent to get where I am today. I have days where I want to give up, but then I take a step back and have to remind myself on how far I’ve come in just three short years. That always brings me back to reality.
Hues by Gabrielle – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Hues by Gabrielle is a creative hair studio located in Vintage Park specializing in healthy natural hair, balayage/blonding, and blowouts. Even though natural hair is my specialty, I am well versed in all textures. I also just recently received my certification in Trichology, so I am now a certified Trichologist. Which just means I specialize in the analysis and treatment of certain hair and scalp disorders.
What sets me apart is being able to create modern and designer haircolor on women of color, which is very rare amongst stylist. Being able to color, care for, and maintain healthy curls is a task in itself. Being very transparent and educating my clients on at home maintenance is also something I strongly believe in. The work doesn’t stop once they leave the salon.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me is me being able to wake up everyday still being passionate about my career. I strive for stability in every aspect of life. It’s so easy to become burnt out in this industry, and I just really want to be able to look up ten years from now and still love what I do.
