Meet Gayla Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gayla Johnson.

Hi Gayla, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
When I first picked up a camera back in 2019, I discovered my talent as a photographer and I haven’t put my camera down since. I started taking photos in clubs, bars, and lounges as extra income then I slowly transitioned to event photography such as birthday parties, baby showers, engagements, funerals, (BTS) behind-the-scenes content, etc. Once I got introduced to studio photography, that changed my whole perspective on capturing a photo. Being in a studio made me want to be more creative and learn different techniques on shooting! At this moment, I’m doing photography full-time and moving towards owning my own photography studio!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been the smoothest road. Of course, nobody knows who you are and you have no work to show it’s hard for people to believe in your craft. I had to start off doing some free photoshoots in the beginning of my career to build my portfolio. Also I took less than market value for my work to garner support for my business until the public realized the quality of my work. Then having limited equipment due to financial instability I had to work with what little I had. Trying to make a profit from your business and still trying to make smart investments in your business is a struggle itself but that’s the case for anybody who’s becoming an entrepreneur. That being said, if this is something that you love doing and it’s your passion then stick it out! What comes easy won’t last, and what lasts won’t come easy!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Apart from being a single mother to my beautiful baby girl, as you can see I also run a full-time photography business. I specialize in studio photography such as birthdays, graduations, maternity, boudoir, and branding! I’m known for my diligent work ethic and just my overall enthusiastic personality. I make my clients feel comfortable, like they’re a part of my family. I believe that is what separates me from other photographers. I don’t look at it as a job, It’s something that I love to do, helping others in any way possible. I’m proud of myself for taking that leap of faith and starting a business. It’s not easy becoming an entrepreneur, but I’m glad I didn’t let my fears overcome my dreams! Just going to see where this journey takes me!

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
It’s kind of shocking seeing it all unfold now but growing up, I was the shy girl who never really liked big crowds. Never was in the spotlight, more behind-the-scenes kind of girl. As you get older and wiser, your interest changes. Knowing what I know now, being in this business you have to be more open to things and I think during that time things changed for the better.
