Today we’d like to introduce you to Glen Carpenter.
Lacking focus after a stint in the Navy, Glen enrolled at a local college an hour north of Detroit, Michigan, where he found his passion in photography. After answering calls from two Detroit photographers, Glen settled in at Elaine Studio, spending nearly a decade honing his craft through the darkroom and more weddings than he cares to recall. After relocating to Houston, Glen shifted gears and now finds joy in “shooting whatever makes him happy”. He’s a member of the Houston Center for Photography where he’s “pursuing the Arts”, attends portfolio reviews amongst his peers and has participated in everything from the Silver Street Flea to Conception Arts Pop Up shows and Open Calls at Houston’s own Art Car Museum.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As a working wedding photographer? I was fortunate enough to have been hired by a long established studio, so that made things fairly easy. As someone intent on establishing himself on the local Art Scene? Crazy difficult (Read- Find a day job). The thing that drives me though is truly being passionate about what I’m doing. When I’m behind the lens, everything just feels right!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Glen Carpenter Photography – what should we know?
My company is small and it’s driven by my love for photography. Though I no longer consider myself a “working photographer”, I pride myself in producing images that people want to purchase for their own pleasure. When a person looks at an image I’ve created, looks me in the eye and says, “I really want that”, it’s a feeling of satisfaction hard to describe. And? I no longer feel the need to be “apart” from others practicing the craft. The artistic community is a wonderful community of people, all striving to express themselves and to do so in their own ways. It’s more supportive than I’d dreamt it ever would be, and encourages itself to simply”Be Someone”.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My wife, Sandra, who’s always said: “Be Happy”. The ENTIRE staff at HCP, as well as those who give such critical reviews on portfolio night! Without them as a virtual yardstick, I’d not had the means to measure my progress.
