Meet Hannah Robinson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Robinson.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’ve always been creative and have been drawing since I was young. I pursued graphic design as my major, and after starting my own design studio and quitting corporate, I found much more time to experiment and spend time drawing or painting. Art can be intimidating. It takes a lot of strength not to be afraid of messing up and even more strength to share it with others. It wasn’t until I began sharing my drawings on Instagram that I learned there is no reason not to share my passion with others and offer it for sale. It blows my mind that there are people hanging up my art in their homes. It is beyond a blessing.

Please tell us about your art.
My focus is illustrations with pen and ink. I tend to do a lot of minimal art that is a bit abstract and imperfect. In fact, my message is that there is beauty in the imperfect and incomplete. I play around with the contour (which means you don’t pick up your pen) as well as fast sketches. There is a beauty to simplicity that I try to capture in a lot of my art.

What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
I think being an artist is much easier today than it was before social media came into the picture. We have the opportunity to share our work with millions all over the globe! It allows us to sell our work, connect, collaborate, and even get discovered. However, social media also allows for a lot of copyright issues and theft. Artists always have to deal with being a victim of theft since many people ignore the rights of artists, feel like they won’t get caught stealing it, or are just ignorant with the way things work thinking if it’s online it’s free to use.

It is also easy to not feel like a real “artist” if you aren’t well known or don’t make a lot of income from it, which is far from the truth. I think cities could throw together more events and popups that allow artists to meet, share and sell their work.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I don’t have any exhibitions right now as I’ve just started pursuing art on the side and am still building up my work and style. Most of my art can be found online in my shop (oaklynstudio.com/shop) or being shared on my Instagram (@hannahrobinsondesign). Sharing or purchasing one of my prints is the best form of support and I appreciate every person who allows a piece of my work in their home.
