Meet Helena Faustin of ThatNurseCanCook

Today we’d like to introduce you to Helena Faustin.

Helena, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I run a popular food blog called “ThatNurseCanCook”, where I share my love for the vibrant and robust flavors of Caribbean cuisine. My passion for cooking began at the age of 15. I would always share recipes with friends and people would tell me that I should start a separate platform to share my love of cooking. What started out as simply sharing my love for cooking with friends has now transformed into a full-fledged blog with an audience that is growing day by day. One look at my blog will transport you right into my kitchen as I share recipes full of traditional herbs and spices native to the Caribbean. I also happen to be a registered nurse at a top-ranked hospital in the heart of New York City. When I’m not saving the lives of children, I’m creating delicious, home-cooked island food, and healing souls, one meal at a time.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey hasn’t always been a smooth road. I’ve struggled with discovering new ways to deliver content, ways to stay relevant, perfect my craft, grow an audience, and do it all while juggling a full-time career and a family. Time has been my biggest enemy because it always seems as if there is never enough of it. Finding a balance between blogging, work, my family, and friends was and still is one of my biggest challenges to date.

ThatNurseCanCook – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My food blog specializes in Caribbean cuisine with a flair. My upcoming eBook contains a spin on old favorites that are common to Caribbean food. It sets itself apart by including authentic ingredients, trending food themes, and it’s personally created by me. Someone with a Caribbean background who truly understands the essence of Caribbean cuisine. I am most proud of the fact that I started my blog one day at a time, one follower at a time, and I have grown so much over the last year. I work really hard, and my work shows it!

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I have several proud moments thus far. From launching my own website, www.thatnursecooks.com, write-ups in publications, and most recently, being contacted by the largest and oldest food company in the Caribbean, GraceFoods to receive and test out their best products!
