Meet Helena Parra

Today we’d like to introduce you to Helena Parra.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Ever since I can remember I loved being involved with art. I vividly remember being proud of a poster I made in school for Mother’s day when I was in second grade which was chosen to be posted at the school entrance. Art has always been fun to me, I forget about my surroundings and am absorbed into my own world of color and forms.

When I was 18 I left my home in Caracas and moved to California to become a Graphic Designer, the techniques I studied helped me refine the skills that later helped me create art with the basic purpose of expressing the beauty of nature, women and hence my own story. As a mother of 4 beautiful children, I was in love with maternity and childhood, so I first started sculpting women in motherhood. Then my women evolved with more voluminous, sensual traits and abstract shapes that made me realized we were growing together hand in hand in life.

Fourteen years ago after arriving in Houston, I transitioned into oil painting while continuing sculpting both in what I consider modern impressionism.

My passion for art led me to start HelenaArte Club teaching other women wanting to explore, experiment and have fun creating art pieces encouraging them to be unique and not copy from Pinterest or other artists. Our art club donates a percentage of our proceeds to charity in my native country Venezuela.

Please tell us about your art.
Women and nature are at the central stage of my inspiration either using light and bright colors in painting or sculpting. I like to create uneven or unfinished forms intentionally so that the viewers interpret them with their own perspective,

As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
Success to me is achieving art that expresses a part of oneself to contemplate and admire as part of life.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I have participated in non-permanent exhibits, and many of my pieces are owned by private art lovers in different parts of the world. Whenever I am invited into an art exhibit or participate in an art festival, I post details in my social media.

Helena Parra is my mom. I can tell you that she is a great example of doing what you love and never stop. She doesn’t paint for fame, money or work. She paints for passion. Many times she gives away her paintings because she knows that she can keep on making art whenever and wherever. I always tell her that she should be exposing at a gallery with great artist but she is to humble and will tell me that she is far away from being a tier 1 artist. she has never been afraid of trying new things and has always given back to the community and children through her art. What you see is what you get a big heart, strong woman, good friend and passionate artists.
    Cheers to you Mom!

I’m a long time friend and a fairly recent student at HelenaArt Club. Helena has helped me to discover a new passion and I’m very grateful for that. She is a very talented artist and teacher who patiently encourages her students to let the ideas, colors and shapes flow, to persue and free an unique style. She recognizes her students strengths and pushes them to get out of their comfort zone. Creativity at a Maximum!
P.S. I also proudly own couple of her paintings, which I love!
