Today we’d like to introduce you to Highway Yella.
Growing up in Haynesville, LA Highway Yella started his music career as Yellow Boy, the Playaland Boss. At the age of 14, Nicholas Brown saw music as a way to vent about the struggle of having big dreams in “Small Town America”. After several trips to Houston, Yella found himself inspired by legendary artists such as Pimp C of UGk, ESG, Lil Flip and the sounds of Swishahouse. I joined Swisha House in late 2018. During this point of his early career, Yella began to create & forge his lyrics, delivery & freestyles that are still a key component in his music. Well-known for his freestyle abilities, he credits studying Houston freestyle legends ESG & Lil Flip. Yella is often compared to the late great Pimp C due to their striking resemblance to each other. While touring the U.S. in 2017 for various appearances and performances, Yellow Boy was inspired to change his stage name to “Highway Yella” due to his constant traveling. It was at that time he formed “Highway Gang” his name for the collective group of artists he works with.
After his release of several mixtapes, Yella garnered the attention of the legendary DJ, Michael “5000” Watts. After several joint releases and ventures, the two formed a bond that would span over half a decade. In early 2019, Yella fulfilled a childhood dream and formed a joint partnership with Michael Watt’s Houston based hip-hop label, Swishahouse and his label Playaland Entertainment to release music. Since his addition to Swishahouse, Yella released “Never Too Late” in March 2019. Armed with features from several notable names in hip-hop including his musical inspirations ESG and Lil Flip, Chalie Boy and more, “Never Too Late” has received positive reviews from the masses. Highway Yella just released debut mixtape on the Swishahouse label, Swishahouse Yella.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Mostly people saying they were gonna do things that could benefit me and never do them. Losing friends and even family members. Having to do mostly everything myself.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Swisha House story. Tell us more about the business.
I’m just trying to be a part of keeping the Swisha House name Legendary. Hopefully, bring it back to like it was in the early 2000s.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck.
