Today we’d like to introduce you to Houston Scott.
Houston Scott was born in New York City and raised most of her life in Paris, Texas. In 2014, after graduating from college, she moved to Houston Texas, where she created her first company Posh Fine Wine and Spirits. Posh Fine Wine and Spirits is the only liquor store in the downtown area of the fourth largest city in the nation. Her passion and skill for retail were cultivated at Spelman College (class of 2014) while she majored in Fashion Merchandising and Women’s Studies. Her internships at the time included leadership positions in well known company brands such as Rent the Runway, Burlington Coat Factory, and CollegeFashionista.com.
From 2014-2018 as the CEO of Posh Liquors in Houston Texas, Houston Scott, was responsible for leading the development and execution of Posh Liquors’ long term strategy with a focused intention of creating and growing the company’s value. Her quick learning ability and sales knowledge at Posh Fine Wine and Spirits were the main contributing factors for the entire company’s success. Posh Fine Wine and Spirits provides convenience and exceptional service to people who work, play, and live downtown. The company delivers products to customers as an extension of their excellent customer service. Visit www.poshliquors.com for more information.
As a young woman in a male dominated industry, Houston found great joy in breaking down barriers and disproving negative stereotypes every day. She aims to prove that young women can run multi-million dollar companies. Posh Fine Wine & Spirits is nearly halfway there, with the second full fiscal year’s revenues coming in over $600,000 (a 100% increase from the first year).
With her wit and keen business sense, Houston Scott did “create a buzz” in the spirits and beverage industry. Houston enjoys swimming, watching movies, socializing, spending time with family, reading, writing, and building her personal brand. Houston Scott sold the business in July of 2019.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
One of my most prominent Challenges was lack of capital. I did not have a reserve of money. Therefore, I had to make sales to fund current and future business. Another Challenge would be the lack of resources to hire staff. There were a lot of trials and errors that I encounter. I wasn’t sure what to look for in an employee or what to look for in one that’s would be a good fit.
I had a big learning curve. I didn’t know anything about how to file sales tax, how to hire or fire, how to write a job description, pick a point of sale system, pick a credit card payment processor, etc. Everything was a learn as you go approach.
Please tell us about Posh Fine Wine and Spirits.
We are a retail liquor store in downtown Houston Texas. We are the only liquor store in downtown Houston Texas (Which is the fourth largest city in the United States). Many of our competitors are in the adjacent parts of town, such as midtown, but downtown there are none other than us. We also do delivery as well through applications as well as our website. We are most known for our convenient location in the middle of the business district in the Convention Center of Houston. We are proud to be the one and only!
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
There are 1 million things I would’ve done differently. The first being is having a reserve of capital for my living expenses before we started the business so that I did not have to take money out of business to pay for my well being. I also would have started with a staff rather than trying to do everything myself at first. I would have hired a lot sooner. I also would have started with more money then we started with. Since it’s a retail business, a lot of capital is needed to put inventory on the floor.
