Today we’d like to introduce you to Jae’la Moody.
Jae’la, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When I was in 9th grade, I would notice some of my peers wearing makeup and lashes… but I could never get the hang of doing makeup! That’s when I was introduced into eyelash individuals, before this I had no knowledge of lashes besides strip lashes… but this was something that just came naturally to me and I say that because I immediately got the hang to it and from that day on I started doing my own individuals. I would buy them from my local beauty supply and use hair glue to attach them and they would stay on a little over a week. To me it wasn’t a big deal, I didn’t even realize how talented I was, but everyone around me was so amazed by it so I got the idea to do individuals on other people…
At the time, I was taking college courses in high school plus being on my school’s cheer team, so it seemed overwhelming to start a business in that moment. So about two years later, I came back to the idea of lashing others. I started to research and I found out that extensions last longer and are more popular, and that’s how I shifted from eyelash individuals to eyelash extensions! At first, it was a little difficult because I was teaching myself how to do everything, not so much the application of eyelash extensions, but the basics, where to buy them, what adhesives are best, how to care for them and things of that nature. But I quickly got the hang of it and from that moment on, I’ve been doing lash extensions. And If I must say, I’ve only gotten better!
Has it been a smooth road?
No, the road hasn’t been smooth at all but I wouldn’t trade the lessons, experiences, and blessings I have received while on this journey for the world. My clientele has always been pretty good, so I never had to worry about marketing or anything in that nature, But it did take me a while to achieve the “volume” look that most women prefer, but of course I eventually learned it. At the moment, I would say that my biggest struggle would be trying to manage school (college now) and lashing. It gets overwhelming because ladies book with me daily but I still have to find time to study, rest and still have a life of my own.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the italklash story. Tell us more about the business.
I specialize in lash extensions, and I also am working on my online boutique (@italkfashionn on Instagram) I am proud of both of these businesses because I have the opportunity to make women feel and look good about themselves!
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
In the next 5-10 years, I see myself opening a beauty bar here on the Northside of Houston. I want it to be a one-stop-shop for women, so besides me being the lash tech and having my boutique there, I plan to join together with other businesswomen and offer their qualities as well. I also want to make my business a brand for lashes and lash supplies. I know how difficult it can be to find good and affordable lash trays so I definitely want to get into that also.
