Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. James Herbst.
So Dr. Herbst, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
A major influence of my pursuit in dentistry was my childhood dentist in Pennsylvania. He was an inspiration and a role model and I sought to follow in his footsteps. I attended the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA), one of the elite dental schools in the US, who, at the time, only accepted three out-of-state students per year.
Having graduated dental school in 1989, I moved to Houston and worked as an associate dentist for 3 years before purchasing my existing practice. It has been 25 years since, and today, we are a team of eight full-time employees in a state-of-the-art facility.
Has it been a smooth road?
In 2010, I completely renovated and expanded my practice in order to enhance the facility and comfort for the patients. The only obstacle I had to overcome was how to keep the practice functioning while the renovations were underway. With the help of my dedicated staff, I was able to make that happen with the minimum of inconvenience to the patients.

As a company owner, my first priority is the patient. I want them to experience first class customer service in a “Tuscan Decor” relaxing environment. My practice respects people’s schedules and we do our utmost to keep appointments in a timely manner. I am known for my gentle and creative touch. I enjoy helping each of my patients improve their health, appearance, and self-esteem by creating the smile of their dreams, and also maintaining the health and function of their teeth, gums, and bite.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Houston is a very friendly and diverse city. I find it easy meeting new people and establishing long term friendships. Coming from a town of approximately 4,000, Houston offers so much more culturally than I had growing up. I also appreciate the fine art “scene”, museums and theater. Traffic comes closest to the thing that I like least.
