Today we’d like to introduce you to Janice Morono.
Janice, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Gracie Barra The Woodlands opened in 2007. We have a large Kids and Adults program for Brazilian Jui Jitsu and Muay Thai. For the adults, we also offer MMA training. Our head BJJ coach, Professor Alex Morono has been training here from day one. Our Head Muay Thai coach, Matt Wald and Alex have been training together over ten years. Professor Alex is an active competitor in the UFC. His head MMA coach is Sayif Saud from Fortis MMA, along with Coach Matt for striking and Professor Joel Heinen for grappling. The rest of our coaches for classes are all brown belts or higher. So you can be confident that you are going to get an organized, high level of training. Our classes begin at age 4, and we have members from the casual trainer to professional athletes. Safety is our number one priority!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Classes are going stronger than ever. We did have two major scares when our gym flooded from Tax Day flood and Hurricane Harvey. We have since rebuilt the gym which could not have been possible without the help and support of our gym family.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Gracie Barra The Woodlands – what should we know?
Our kid’s program for BJJ and Muay Thai is the heart of our gym. For BJJ, we have four different kids age groups and start at four years old. (Ages 4-6, 7-9,10-11, and 12-15) Our Muay Thai kids are broken up in 2 age groups. (6-10 and 11-15) For adults, we offer BJJ, Muay Thai, and MMA. Our adults have a good mix of white belts (beginners) to black belts (advanced). As owners, Alex and I are most proud of our staff. Without our Program directors and coaches, our business would not be where it is. We always welcome everyone to try us for one week with no obligation! This lets our guests get a feel of the different coaches and classes. Our coaches and facility speak for itself so we never pressure anyone to sign up as soon as they walk through our door. We highly encourage questions while visiting with us as well!
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
We are an honest and fair, family-owned small business. We like to give back to the community by sponsoring local schools and kids. Professor Alex has been a guest speaker at multiple schools and venues. We take our position as coaches and role models seriously and strive to be good examples for our future kids. We also do periodical Parent’s Night Out to give our parents a few hours off on a Friday.
