Meet Jared “Chairy” Marshall

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jared “Chairy” Marshall.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was a sensitive and precocious child who was instinctively drawn to the drums. My parents did not want me to play because it was too loud, too expensive etc. I got my first job at 15 and started saving up money to get my own kit and really have never stopped since.

I always had an ear for melody and how music was structured and arranged so I began to write my own stuff and wanted to record it. Maybe more importantly, I was always into unique stuff. Experimental approaches, different ways of doing things, new sounds, new collections of sounds. Since recording time was expensive and difficult to book I set out to teach myself engineering. This autodidact drive has never left me and is taking me to new places every day.

I most recently dove way deep into synthesizers and built my own modular synth which is now an integral part of how I make music. I also got deep into jazz around 2013 and that caused me to totally rework my playing-style on the drums and flesh out my improvisational instincts.

Please tell us about your art.
I create exploratory tapestries of sound which evolve and take shape in real time. My greater goal is to expose and crystallize information from the creative source (which I see as feminine) and translate it through sonic vibration, visual art, and dance

I am interested to help people exit their minds and root in the body. To reintroduce the importance of the somatic experience. To encourage connection with ourselves and each other through ecstatic experience and elevate the spirit

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
Unless you are independently wealthy I think financial support is still the biggest challenge right now. If you see a painting, experience a performance, or hear a song that moves you, find out what you can purchase or donate to the artist directly to support their work. I think now that we are all constantly bombarded by media it’s easy to take for granted the time, study, dedication, and effort that goes into creating a great work of art. Please support your local artists 🙂

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
